I had the good fortune of being Ernie's first serious girlfriend. We began dating as starry eyed 15 yr old sophmores and dated through most of high school. The memories of our time together are forever etched in my heart and in my mind. The Beltramo family welcomed me into their home with loving and open arms. Ernie's mom (DeeDee) taught me how to cook his favorite foods while Larry Sr. often looked on with amusement at having a "girl" in their all boy household. Ernie was a fixture in my home as well. On one occasion, just after he got his beloved "souped-up" Chevy Nova, Ernie and I peeled away from my house with the tires squealing and rubber burning. He spied my dad chasing him down the street in his underwear, screaming "damn it Ernie-- slow down, that's my daughter with you!" Ernie was laughing so hard we had to pull over. Of course,, he was acutely aware of what was awaiting him upon our return. My dad tried being angry with him, but could'nt get past his huge grin and the sparkle of mischief in his eyes. As a young man Ernie told me he wanted nothing more than to become an electrician, get married and have enough boys to field his own football team to make him a happy man. I was in contact with him intermittently throughout the years. We chatted about the paths our lives had taken, and reminisced about the time we spent together. He lamented not having children of his own, and asked (true to form with his humor) if maybe I would be willing to help him out. Since I have 3 boys already, he figured another 6-7 boys would be enough for a good scrimmage! Ernie could always make me laugh..Had I known it would be the last time I'd see him, I would have hugged him a little tighter and kissed him a little longer...I would have let him know how profoundly he's influenced my life. It has been said that you never forget your first love, for me this is true. In a sense, we grew up together. We learned from each other, and experienced romantic for the first time in our young lives. For this I will be forever grateful to have had such an incredibly loving, funny and honorable young man to have taken that amazing and sometimes scary journey with through our teens. I love you Ernie.. Always have. Always will... My heartfelt love and condolences to Larry Jr. and John (Johnny) and their respective famlies, as well as to all the people who were blessed to have known this wonderful man....
