Freddie Rash-Whitehead

Friday, February 21, 2014
Dear Jimmy, Johnny, Steve, Ralph, and Kathy,

David and I both were so sad to learn of Freddie's death. Of course, we will all go sometime but we mourn the loss of such a dear, sweet, caring, devoted, honorable, and intelligent presence on this earth.

Your parents meant so much to us. As you can imagine, they were the best neighbors. Ralph assiduously raked up the magnolia leaves that fell on our side of the shared yard. We were the happy recipients of lots of their homegrown vegetables. We remember well the night the ambulance arrived when Ralph was stricken and how Freddie took such loving care of him afterward, taking over the driving and everything else.

After we'd moved, we would run into them occasionally at the grocery store and it was a joyous reunion. Once after we'd moved, Freddie invited me over to see what the new neighbors had done to “our” backyard. Freddie and I stood at her kitchen window and peered out unobserved.

The last time we saw Freddie, we happened to run into her and Jim the day after their wedding. We are so happy for her that she had a companion to the end of her life. We must say we have never read a more gracious inclusion of a second family in an obituary as you gave Jim and his family. That is such a tribute to Ralph and Freddie and the generous, caring children they raised.

We are so sorry we will be out of town this weekend for Freddie's memorial service. We'll be in Houston shopping with Corynne for her September wedding to Chris Yamasaki. Yes, our first child is marrying and we may live to see a grandchild yet.

Ralph and Freddie hold such a special place in our hearts. Please accept our deepest condolences and extend them to Jim and the rest of your family.
