I would like to echo all that has been said below by others. Gary was, to me, extraordinarily kind, generous, supportive, and decent. I have for three decades considered him one of my mentors in the discipline of composition studies, although I was not his student and spent relatively little time with him. His good sense and sharp insights as an administrator, scholar, and editor have been powerful influences for me. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Priscilla.

Gary was one of those people I was always glad to meet at conventions--affirmative, inventive, conscientious. We didn't talk much about our common background as Lobos nor as Eiscopalians, for we were more involved with the issues of society that could be addressed by teachers and more particularly the issues of composition and rhetoric.
