Hortencia Barcena Fernandez (Barcena)
My sincerest condolences. Mrs. Fernandez was my third grade teacher during the 1989-1990 school year. She had such a huge impact on my life. I remember when she would tell us, "Get in position," which meant we had to sit up with good posture. She also gave me supplies and candy because she knew that I came from a poverty stricken home. I'm so sorry I barely found out about your passing. I always wanted to find you to say, "thank you for everything." You influenced my life and now I've been teaching for 9 years and hope to have a similar impact on my students like you had on me. It's true what they say, we may forget the classroom lessons but we never forget the way our teachers made us feel, and you, Mrs. Fernandez, made me feel like I was important and that I could dream about being great. I can never thank you enough.
Having worked with Hortencia for many years at Edgemere, I was blessed to call her a good friend. Her courageous, generous spirit was an inspiration to me. I will miss her very much. Roberta Andrews
I had the honor to room with Hortencia at retreat. She was so warm and comforting. We laughed, cried and shared so much. My condolences go out to her family.
You were such a beautiful elegant lady who always made me feel so welcome and special. Your love for your family and their love for you was always so apparent at every get together. My husband referred to you as his other mother, loved you and appreciated your love sooo much. You will be so missed by your friends and family, my condolences to the many who loved and were loved by you.
Gilbert and I have known Hortencia for a long time. She was a wonderful person, always with a smile on her face and a true educator who loved working with her students and a very deep, special love for her own children. She will be sorely missed but we can be happy for she is rejoicing in heaven with the Lord. God Bless!
