What can we say about a wonderful couple who at first became our California parents but who eventually became our dearest friends. Papa D and Mrs. D will always have a very special place in our hearts. Love and hugs to all the family..you have been such a wonderful part of our lives since our early Seal Beach life!

I don't know Howard's family, but I send my condolences. I knew Howard through St. Cyprian Church. What a warm and kind man! I'm sorry I didn't know about his funeral service or I would have been there to pay respects to this true gentleman. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Incense…

...the smell of incense, sharp and smoky
pungent wisps of frankincense and myrrh
memories and flashbacks to a time before
when I stood on the other side of the altar

...young boy draped with a loose cassock
lighting candles and laying out vestments
prepare the cruets with water and wine
set out the bells and check on the time

...soon he would signal silent but firm
we were on our way to meet the casket
six sharp tuxedos sharing the burden
escorting the one who now walks with the Lord

...the organ pipes groaned and hummed
a melodious tune to guide this procession
up the center aisle to a hallowed position
between tall candles at the foot of the altar

...here we would stand stiffly at attention
ever on guard as if to keep away demons
as the pews filled with sobs and shudders
many people gathered together in sorrow

...a child's cry splits the deafening silence
the priest clears his throat a signal to begin
the words are cracked and difficult to hear
even he has trouble and chokes back a tear

...a song and a reading from the big red book
a tale of another place and a time long ago
stories that try to give meaning and consolation
to those whose loss is still a gaping wound

...the smell of incense, sharp and smoky
blends with the scent of perfume and flowers
bringing back the memories and the tremors
that flow through my body and tug at my soul

...back to the reality of this solemn Saturday
we are here as family and together with friends
sharing thoughts and feelings about Howard
and his contributions to each and every one of us

...to me he was "George" and that memory is lasting
one day many, many years ago he told me a story
and it stuck, "George is the never ending name
it can go on forever, GEORGEORGEGEORGE."

I never had the pleasure of meeting Howard but he must have been special since he raised a wonderful daughter in Lynette.

Dear Carole and Family,

I am so glad I was able to reconnect with your Dad this past year or so. I always knew he was a wonderful father and husband, but it was such a treat to listen to some of his personal adventures and get to know him better. I'm so sorry you've lost him. I'll miss him too.

Love from Marilyn (and Jerome)
