I just heard.
As a Pastor, Jim was a friend of mine from when I first met him in 1969 until I moved elsewhere in 1975. He was a better and more stable man than I. We both worked together to make constructive changes in the Heritage Hill and Belknap Lookout neighborhoods of NE Grand Rapids, including the Hill Community Child Care Center, first called the Hill Community Day Care Center, helping to keep it started and going from 1970 all the way to today.
He and Sue were major helpers to my first two little sons, Mark and John Sellers.
He wants any donations to go the Hill Child Care Center.
When Bethlehem Lutheran Church moved from Crescent Street NE to Commerce Street SW downtown, he followed, where his memorial service was held.
He moved to better shores way too young, only 73 here, after a healthy life style. There has no prejudice in the man. What a teacher and man!!

I've just heard of Mr.Swanlund's passing. I am so very sorry for your loss. I have wonderful memories of Mr. Swanlund. I was a student at Dickinson for K through 5th. The highlight of the summer was when Mr. Swanlund would take the time to make the rounds in the neighborhood to all the children who would be returning to school in the fall! He would let me sit in his car and pretend I was driving us to go get ice cream. Out of all the Principals and teachers I've had, it is Mr. Swanlund who stands out after all these years. He will forever be in my memories. I wish everyone could experience an awesome Principal and person!
Dear Sue and Family, we just learned of Jim's passing. We haven't seen you for quiet a while but we do have happy memories from the youth group at Bethlehem. Our kids grew up together and so, I guess, did we. Our deepest sympathy and hugs to all of you.
Julie and family,
Your dad was a great loss to the community. He will be remembered and missed in the Dickinson community. Our prayers goes out to you and your family. Rely and trust in God.
Dear Swanlund Family,
My sympathies and prayers go out to you. I was a student at Dickinson and actually Mr. Swanlund had all five of us Knight children. I was very fond of him, I remeber him letting me put a fish in the school aquarium. I also remember him taking my brother Tim and his Friend Jeff Mcguire for a ride in his sports car and said to them you want to drive and taking the stearing wheel of and handing it to them while he was driving. I hand good memories, he will be missed
