I grew up living next door to Joe and Joann Ray. They were the kindest neighbors that anyone could ever be lucky enough to have. My mother raised me as a single mom and Joe was a father figure that I looked up to growing up. I remember if I was having a bad day, all I had to do was walk next door and I would be greeted by Joe saying "Come on in Suzie (his nickname for me) and I felt important. Joe loved sports and would listen to me ramble on about my childhood days , never once telling me how important the game on TV was to him. I remember drawing a picture for Joe of he and Joann getting married; he hung that picture on the wall of the study for years even though I drew him with a hairy belly. That was what is great about Joe, he could always laugh at himself. People like Joe are rare in this world and I will never forget his welcoming words as I am sure he is welcoming people to heaven that way now. May God be with Joann as I know they were together many years and help her heal and know how much Joe loved her and always will be with her in spirit. God bless you Joe, until we meet again and I am sure I will feel welcomed.

Joe and I worked together for over twelve years. He was a gentleman and a good-hearted friend with a ready laugh who always had a joke or story to tell.

As the secretary of the 'infamous' football pool, I began the custom of designing 'tombstones' for the fallen bettors. Sadly, a real one now closes the legacy of 'Vegas Joe'.

.....'odds are on Joe's arrival he was wearing his usual fedora and had a 'pearly gates' joke ready for all to enjoy......RIP.......

Joe was a valued and trusted colleague for many years when we worked together for the State of Texas. That association resulted in a friendship of over 30 years. Being a non-gambler, except for a few forays into the stock market, I was always fascinated by Joe's fascination with Las Vegas and its gambling activities. I would always look forward to Joe's report on his last trip to Vegas.

Joe possessed few vices and was a kind and generous man. Contrary to some of us quick to anger, Joe was always the one with the cool head. Joe Lynn Ray was an exemplary human being.

Since Joe's recent medical problems, I have missed him at our monthly Chinese buffet lunches. I shall miss him always.
