Jon O. Carlson 1942 - 2013

Jon O. Carlson

Wednesday, April 08, 2015
I sang baritone in the Jacksonville Symphony Chorus 2002-2004, under the direction of Dr. Carlson. I did not know of his passing until today, with the arrival of the flyer for the Jax Children's Chorus 20th Anniversary, which Dr. Carlson helped start. I apologize for this late condolence but I did not know. Dr. Carlson guided us in his gentle way, coaxing the best from all of us. He never got upset or had an ego, as many directors do. He was a great mentor (to those not too sure of their voices, as well as accomplished singers)... He will be missed.

It has been three months since the Jacksonville, FL community lost a wonderful musical genius who departed this world to be with Jesus after enduring a difficult and long-fought battle. Dr. Jon O. Carlson was a great inspiration to many, always strived for excellence, and possessed a strong faith. He transformed the choral community, and I am indeed privileged and thankful to have known him and had him as a professor. In addition to his kindness, I particularly remember the wonderful choral concerts he directed at JU, especially at Christmas, and I also cannot forget the constructive rehearsals he would lead. My thoughts and prayers continue for his family and friends during this difficult time. May God bless them with comfort and peace, and may we all cherish the wonderful memories of Dr. Carlson. Although he is dearly missed, how fitting it is that he should pass on All Saints' Day.

Thank you, Dr Carlson. You taught us how to live and today's memorial was beautiful.
We were blessed to have sung with and for you.

When I was a JU student, I would walk across his floor only to discover him there! He would "hook" me in, and start playing choral music from areas of the world with wonderful discussions. I spent lots of time listening and debating with Jon the colors of this music. Then I would leave his office with a big list of what CDs to buy. He was a superb man and a treasure of mine I will not forget. I bet when he is received in heaven he will give the angels some new, glorious choral music forever. May God be with him and his music.May he rest peacefully!

Professor Carlson directed our daughter at JU for four years. She learned so much from him. Their concerts were beautiful. We appreciate all he did for her and for the college of music at Jacksonville University. Our condolences to the family. Jane and Tom Schmidt , Ponte Vedra Beach, FL
