I hope you do not mind. I will use this as my way to say Goodbye to Cama.
To My Grandma:
I am sitting here with three of your great-grandkids looking at your picture on the wall. Right now, they ask me “who dis?” and I tell them “Cama.” But one day they'll ask me, “Who is this?” I look forward to telling my boys about my Grandma. I feel like I'm the grand child who knew you the least, but it does not mean and we loved each other any less.
Cama, as we called her, was an amazing woman who knew great sorrow, as well as great love. She was very talented but not showy. You only have to look at the beautiful baby outfits that she handmade for you see one of these talents. She was also brave and independent. When she was young single mother of two she left everything she knew behind and moved to another county. Once there, she had to learn a new language and culture and then find a way to support her family. She was lucky enough to fall in love more than once.
Cama knew true heartbreak of losing children too early in life. In this we were kindred spirits. However, she was a second mother (proxy or surrogate) to many. While many needed her to fulfill this role, I was never one of them, because she gave me one my greatest treasures in my life...my mother. She raised an extraordinary woman whom I would be lost without.
Cama always had room at her table. She loved to feed us. Her kitchen often had rice pudding cooking on the stove and if not she would offer you anything. She was proud of her family and loved them dearly. She surrounded herself with their pictures when we could not be there in person.
She could make anything grow. She cared for her plants the same way she cared for people. She loved them, treated their symptoms, and supported them until they were strong enough to get back out on their own. Then she stood back and watched them blossom.
I don't think she ever tired of shopping. We would all drop with throbbing feet and she would shop on in some of the most uncomfortable shoes known to man. She also loved to dance. I have a memory of a time she was babysitting my brother Russ and I (not sure if Kirk was there). We were playing beauty parlor and putting rollers in her hair when Aunt Vickie came in to share a song from an album (sort of like a MP3)e she just got. The song was called “Short people have no reason to live”. We thought the song was funny. But she did not. You know what, the song is wrong. Short people have every reason to live. Although she was small in stature she was big in heart.
Cama, thank you for living and blessing so many lives. Thank you for giving us what we needed when it was needed. I needed you simply to listen, one broken-hearted mother to another. You were there. You will never know how comforted I felt knowing that someone I knew and loved had gone through something similar and recovered. Please take care of Mercedes for me. I will miss you for a while and love you forever. When the time comes I look forward to being in your embrace.
Love, Mari
