Thank you to all the family and friends who came to see my dad off. For your kind words of comfort, for being with us when words were not enough. For your love that was expressed in so many ways. On behalf of my familia, we love you and thank you. Maria, Sylvia, Jose
A Good Man Saved
Ramon Arellanes was a good man, he was the man that helped raise my husband, spent every day with him teaching him guiding him, he was his Father figure. He was a cute funny man from the time I met him 19 years ago until he passed away. I had no problem calling him “Tata,†because to me he was the Grandpa I'd never had. From the time I was 18 until I turned 37 he would greet me with the biggest happiest grin, hugging me he would say “oh look at you, you got taller,†and he would smile ear to ear from the time we came until the time we drove away as he would stand outside waving us goodbye. I could see he loved us and felt loved.
Ramon served in WWII, he fought against the Nazi's and as any man that had gone to war saw and did things he would not want to speak of. However one night when we were visiting he was upset and spoke to me about a time he could not understand. He began to tell me the story of when he was in the battle field fighting with bullets flying everywhere, he was stuck in the trenches, his friends were dying all around him. When he was the only one left, he thought he would not make it out alive because his body was much too drained to fight anymore, to run, or even move. He screamed at the top of his lungs “GOD SAVE ME!†And he felt someone lift him, carry him on His back and out of the battlefield until the sound of bullets were no longer heard. Ramon looked at the strong gentle Man with amazement, saying “Jesus, Jesus.†Tata looked at me and his eyes wide saying “It was Jesus, Jesus carried me, saved me.†My eyes teared as Ramon (Tata,) told me this story. I sat their listening. And Tata asked me “Why? Why did God save me? Why did God save me and let my friends die? They were good people, and I wasn't, I was bad, I don't understand why God would send his son to die and to carry me, I didn't deserve it, Jesus died on the cross and he did nothing wrong, why would God allow him to die on the cross?†I looked at Tata and told him “Because He loves us, He loves you Tata.†Tata shook his head at me and said “Why would God love me?†I said “Because you're his child and you're wonderful.†Tata smiled put his hand on mine, looked at me and said “Mairia your good, please pray for me.†I said “Of course Tata I love you.â€
I never knew what Tata had done that was so bad, that he could not forgive himself and that doesn't matter, he was sorry, God forgave him and to me he was a beautiful sweet old man, full of love and kindness. Yes, he didn't understand why Jesus had saved him, but God has reasons for everything, God loves us all, and if God had not saved Tata that day, I would not know the man I call husband, or the six beautiful children I have here on earth, he would not have married Mikes Grandmother and, my children's Grandmother, Great Uncle, cousins and Mikes brother and sister would not exist. I love my family with all my heart and happy that Jesus saved Tata again and again. With that never ending love He saved and created beautiful, awesome people. I am thankful to have known such a wonderful man, and will miss his joyful face and constant warm love, and yet I'm happy Tata can finally understand.
