William Dismore Chapple 1936 - 2014

William Dismore Chapple

Sunday, March 22, 2015
I worked with Bill many years ago as an undergraduate research assistant. He was so kind and helpful to his students. The funniest moment I remember is when I walked into his tiny dark research room and quietly said "Dr. Chapple..." "Oh, Linda" he said "Every time you say Dr Chapple, I look around for my father. Please call me Bill." He guided my studies for four years which allowed me to get a job in research right out of college. I am pleased to hear that he had such a long productive life. He was a good man!

I remember many, many conversations with Bill especially from our Horsebarn Hill times, when we used to have lunch in the lobby of the departmental building.
Among many things, he was a good cook. We both shared our love for good recipes where seafood was involved. Bill and Wendy very much enjoyed with Angel, Lania and I a seafood (Marinera) paella at a dinner party at home. It was a memorable evening, full of flavors, good conversation and better laughs. As long as we remember him, he will always stay with us, with his endless charm and great intelligence. A toss for Bill!

What a terrible loss to everyone who knew Bill. He was a true gentleman, scientist, renaissance man, musician and genius. And humble too. Despite his vast intellect and experiences, he always made you feel as if you were on his level. He was a wonderful mentor and friend and I will always be grateful I met and worked with him. I'm celebrating a life well lived, but still much too short. Bill Chapple can never be replaced, and will be very much missed. Our sincere condolences to Wendy and his family and friends. What a wonderful man Bill was. He took such great care of Wendy without losing his science, his humor or his music during these difficult years. It was always such a pleasure to run into him somewhere. He was so active in the world in so many different ways. His death will be felt in many different communities, from politics to research to music and sailing. Not to mention his enthusiasm for dessert following our sewing evenings.
