Just learned of Bill's passing. I count myself among the truly fortunate to have been mentored and more importantly - to be considered a friend to Bill. He was truly a significant contributor to the scientific community and has left a more lasting contribution (his greatest accomplishment) with the family he's left behind. He will be truly missed.
Bill is one of the great people. Bill's happiness was evident, shared and felt by everyone around him. He loved his family, friends and work. (Yes, he loved science too.) He shone. All of us will forever remember the lift to our step he gave us with every encounter. He did this so reliably and effortlessly we knew to turn to him for the big and little things.
I was so sorry to hear of Bill's passing, Gail. The obituary in the Dayton Daily said that he was a mentor to many scientists, and I would count myself among them. He was always kind and supportive to me. He was a great guy. I will keep you and your sons and grandchildren in my prayers. Yours, Tom Wittberg.
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
Gail, I was saddened to hear of your loss. Please know how very sorry I am. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
