Carlos "Shawty Lo" Walker

Carlos “Shawty Lo” Walker, an Atlanta-based hip-hop artist known for hit singles such as “Laffy Taffy” and “Dey Know,” died in an automobile accident Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was 40.

Shawty Lo founded the Southern hip-hop group D4L in 2003 with fellow Atlantans Fabo, Mook-B, and Stoney. The group’s 2005 debut album, “Down for Life,” was a gold record and included the hits "Betcha Can't Do It Like Me" and "Laffy Taffy,” the latter of which was listed as the most downloaded song in history in the 2007 “Guinness Book of the World Records.”

In 2007, Shawty Lo released a solo album, “Units in the City,” featuring the singles “Dey Know,” “Dunn Dunn,” and “Foolish.” The album reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart. In the years after “Units in the City,” he has released a number singles while working on a second solo album.

Alongside the rap group D4L, Shawty Lo also founded a music label of the same name in 2003, eventually responsible for his own music as well as that of artists such as DG Yola, Braski, and others. In 2011, 50 Cent’s G-Unit South acquired the D4L label in a deal reportedly worth more than $10 million.

Shawty Lo is survived by nine daughters and two sons.
