James Warren Obituary

Published by Funeraria Del Angel Hillcrest & Hillcrest Memorial Park on May 19, 2011.
James A. Warren April 14, 1937 - May 16, 2011 Local Racing Legend and NHRA Hall of Famer James Warren passed away May 16, 2011 after a brief battle with pneumonia. James was a member of the legendary racing team of Warren, Coburn and Miller, which were better known as the Ridge Route Terrors. The team was sponsored by Rain For Rent, who also employed James, and he later retired with over 40 years of service. Wheelman Warren, tuner Coburn, and sponsor and partner Marvin Miller, hailed from Bakersfield, and had to make a three-hour tow over the San Gabriel Mountains on Highway 99 -- the famed Ridge Route -- to reach the mecca of Southern California drag strips, which earned them the nickname "The Ridge Route Terrors." There are stories of other teams having spotters stationed at the end of the route to see which freeway the Terrors would take and what their destination might be so that the other teams could quickly head off to a different track, as far away from them as possible. James loved life and enjoyed the thrill of racing right up to the end. When he left this world he took a piece of everyone's heart with him and he will be truly missed by his family, friends, and fans. James is survived by his spouse Juanita, son Rick Ramay and daughter in law Teresa, daughter Cindie and son in law John Webb, and siblings Larry, Rick, Howard, Carol, Karen, and Pat. Brother in laws Larry and Bob, sister in law Jewel, and many family and friends. James was preceded in death by his parents and brother in law Roger Coburn who was also his long time racing partner. A viewing will be held Friday, May 20, 2011, with graveside services on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 2:00pm, at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, 93306. www.bakersfield.com/obits

James Warren was my boy hero, I used to love to watch him race at irwindale Lions drag strip Pomona during the winter Nationals, Orange county dragway. And of course every once in awhile my father would take me up to Bakersfield. I really miss watching MRS

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

June 1, 2011

Growing up back in middle western Illinois during the 1960's, I read Hot Rod Magazine and all the other drag racing magazines regularly. One name that kept popping up was Warren Coburn and Miller. Little did I realize when I first encountered nostalgia drag racing and cacklecars in 1998, I would have the honor of meeting such people as James Warren. Judging from the comments of some of the others in the Guest Book, I regret that I did not have the opportunity of knowing James better. I was able to participate (to some small extent) in the preservation of the history of drag racing by capturing the restoration of the Warren Coburn and Miller front motor car on film, something that feel very fortunate to have done.

My sincere condolences to all of James family and friends. God bless you all!

I will always remember James and Roger for the fact that as many times as I raced against them, they were always gentlemen. They did what they said they were going to do, and there were never any problems or disagreements.

The other thing that will stay with me is that you had to be at the top of your game whenever you raced the Ridge Route Terrors, because you knew they were going to be a handful. More than just fellow racers, these guys were also my friends. I will miss both of them deeply, and James will be in my thoughts and fond recollections as long as I live. R.I.P my friend.

James (and Roger) were the poster boys for a Class Act. I loved racing James for many reasons the foremost being it was ALWAYS a clean deal - no games. He was a rare breed in that if he won or you won there was nothing but the feeling it was fun and we'll do it again. The last time I raced him was at Orange County in 1976 and I beat him twice (once in qualifying and 1st round). When you got the best of WCM you felt good because they were the bar we shot for.

Of all the losses we've experienced over the last few year of our peers , James was one that cut very deep. I would love to think he and Roger are somewhere better getting ready to take us all on again.

My most sincere condolences to his family and to all of us who loved and respected him.
