U.S. VeteranGeorge “Eddie” McMinn, Jr., a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 26, 2013 surrounded by his family at Community Hospital in Anderson following a brief illness. He was born on August 12, 1936 in Elwood, the son of George Edward and Helen Fern (Campbell) McMinn. He worked in the computer control department of Norfolk & Southern Railroad Company for 41 years, and retired in 1998. Eddie was a 1954 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School in Elwood, and later attended Ball State University. He married Marie L. Brown on August 4, 1956. Eddie was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Marines. He was a devoted member of the Main Street Wesleyan Church in Elwood; active in the B.Y.F. program; and was well-known as a dedicated volunteer at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood for 14 years. Eddie served on the Pipe Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, and was Secretary for Pipe Creek Fire Department for more than 20 years. He was a past president of the Oakland Elementary School P.T.A.; a member of the Elwood Kiwanis Club; an avid supporter of the Elwood Concerts in the Park Series; and a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Raiders sports fan. He formerly enjoyed golfing, hunting, and especially liked working in his yard. Eddie always had a smile on his face, and was friendly to everyone he met.

His surviving family includes his wife of 57 years, Marie L. (Brown) McMinn of Elwood; 2 sons, Edward J. (wife Carol) McMinn of Anderson and Rodney A. (wife Lisa) McMinn of Elwood; sister, Mary Helen Huffman of Alexandria; grandson, Joey McMinn of Elwood; step-grandson, Jason Boyer; 3 step great-grandchildren, Jordan, Sophie, and Carson Boyer; brother-in-law, Kenny (wife Yevonne) Brown and daughter Hannah Brown all of Lapel; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Eddie was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Eddie’s life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 20, 2013 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Tim Becker, Pastor Neal Brown, and Sister Rosie Coughlin officiating. Members of the Pipe Creek Volunteer Fire Department will be present at the service. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery where military honors will be presented by the U.S. Marines and the Elwood V.F.W. / American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 to 6 PM Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home, and will include a St. Vincent Volunteers Memorial Service at 5:00 PM.
