I first met "Mr. Sabol" aboard the USCGC SEBAGO (WHEC-42) at the CG Yard in Curtis Bay, MD. He had just reported aboard as a fresh Ensign and I had just reported as a new Radioman, fresh from "A" school.

Even though his quarters were in the wardroom, all of the enlisted crew immediately felt Mr. Sabol was a shipmate. He was learning to be a deep water Coastie just like many of us aboard. We all looked toward our saltier shipmates for guidance and it was a good feeling to look at this young Ensign and see both his smile and enthusiasm.

His old shipmates miss him and remember him fondly.

Thinking of you tonight. I think about you a lot of nights. Still in disbelief. We all miss you so much. Thanks for being an awesome Uncle!!!! And thanks for providing us with many good stories to tell after we've been drinking!!!! All that we would have told with you present, of course!! You are loved and missed.

I think about you often. Missing you and certainly missing your "gatherings." You always kept the family coming together. I hope this continues, as we all have such busy, hurried lives, it seems. We all love you, and no doubt you are watching over your children and grandchildren. I pray for them to be strong, knowing the difficulty of losing, and forever mourning a father and grandfather. You are missed and thought of always. I love you, Uncle Albert.

missing you today, surrounded by champagne and tears

I am without words to find out of the passing of Albert. I was up watching The Legend of bagger Vance and of course immediately thought of Albert. I attempted to send him an email to say hi and see how he was doing and instead was redirected here. I am without words and with tears over such a sudden loss of one of the most upstanding men I have ever known. Albert was always so happy and so proud of his tractor but more than anything he loved his family and golf, and the Coast Guard. He loved the Coast Guard Golf Tournament and golf. I have such fond memories of him helping me with my golf swing and game and always enjoyed hitting balls with him at River Creek. I am without words over his loss but have so much to say about such a spectacular guy.

I give you this one thought to keep -
I am with you still, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on fallen snow,
I am sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning's hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone -
I am with you still - in each new dawn.

My dear Albert, you are so missed... far too many moments to count... xoxo

"There but for the grace of God go I." This was in your Coast Guard handbook as you were ready to become a new cadet so many years ago. You realized that by the way you gave the best of yourself knowing that life cannot be taken for granted. Rest in peace, Albert, and may God wrap his loving arms around your family as they move through each day.

Albert - you brought me on board to grace Reston with their own rival Internet music company to Napster. Yes we helped resurrect 'The Who' when they played at Nissan Pavilion. Long hours, little pay, too many pizzas and many many good people you hired to work as a part of your team. Erin, Larry and so many others were as cheerful and positive as you were leading us while learning from your 'can do' Coastie Attitude. May you find peace in heaven and may your family and friends celebrate your joy-filled contribution to us.

Chris Sabol and family,

Please accept my deepest sympathy in the passing of Albert. Mistakenly, I failed to include your name in the previously guest book signing. My heart is hurting for all of you. This is such a terrible shock.

We were very saddened to hear of Albert's untimely death! To his children, their spouses and grandchildren, Maryann, Lou Ann, Angela, Harry & Lenny and all the Sabol family, you have our deepest sympathy. Words cannot express how you are feeling, but to know you are loved can maybe help somewhat. He was always smiling, so he certainly enjoyed life to the fullest.

Love, your cousin, Joann (Zamiska) Chelkis, Allan and family

"Living is the art of loving. Loving is the art of caring. Caring is the art of sharing. Sharing is the art of living. If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else..."

Albert Sabol was charming, handsome, funny, deeply caring, sensitive, sweet, honorable and really the truest gentleman you could ever hope to meet. He was a bright light in anyone's day, always having a smile, a chuckle, a thoughtful gesture, a cheer, a "Terrific!" or motivating KAATN for those around him.

Albert was keenly observant, incredibly patient, and would be there for others no matter what. He genuinely cared for people and took the time to lend a hand or to talk with them about their lives whether he knew them or not. He asked every waitress' life story, helped carry groceries in the store, opened doors, held doors, helped elderly into their cars, asked "So where y'all from?" in elevators. Wherever he was, he would reach out to people.

Albert enjoyed sharing what he had and making life wonderful for those in his life. Whether it was taking his entire family to vacation in Hawaii, scouting resorts for the next golf invitational, stocking fish in the lake to make his grandson's birthday party extra special, setting up a winding train to run in his house at Christmas, or rushing home after work to prepare a backyard sled run the night before a predicted snowstorm, he was always taking the time and making the effort to ensure everything was "just right."

Albert lived each day to its fullest. He would buy champagne by the case since every day was a special occasion and meant to be celebrated with those in his life. Even plowing the fallen snow with his antique tractor was joyfully anticipated because it then meant a glass of good cheer could be shared with each neighbor along the way...

Albert truly believed every moment was magical, to be embraced and savored. He possessed a child-like enjoyment of the world around him and actively participated in all the experiences he encountered along the way. Albert could be found dressed in a "Captain America" shirt and swim trunks to jump in the chilly February New Jersey waters with his kids, or wearing a hairnet while creating an original, extra-special candy bar with his grandson at Hershey Park, or peering out his bedroom window with Cannon at 4am as they both eagerly awaited the early morning snowfall.

Albert had character of great conviction, yet one of his greatest strengths was his love for all that was life. He would dance, sing or hum to music with a twinkle and that smile. He loved to cuddle, to hug, to hold a hand, a good massage, a tickle, back scratch or gentle touch. He would be deeply moved when an underdog overcame great obstacles or by a beautiful love story in a movie or musical he was watching. He was not afraid to reach out, to feel and to love.

Our dear Albert... we are all suddenly a bit lost, good sir, trying to right the ship that you "captained" so well... In your honor we will take all we have learned from you and make the most of each day that we are given. You are treasured and will be deeply missed... Fare thee well with your wings as you soar above this world you loved so much. You are the hero that God wants for all people to be.

He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much;
who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children;
who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;
who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul;
who has never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it;
who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he had;
whose life was an inspiration;
whose memory a benediction.

These words describe you perfecly, Al. We love you. XXOO

Our dear Uncle Albert...

One of the most unique individuals I have known. Always good for a laugh, a joke, a smile. And that smile... he was one of those people who smiled with his eyes. I will never forget that!

He loved to have a good time! Uncle Albert was probably the most hospitable person I've known, always offering his home for a place to stay or a gathering. You were always very well taken-care of there. He never missed an event... he was there for you for every celebration, every success, every joy, every mournful event... whatever life brought.

He was a loyal son, brother, and friend... a proud father, and doting grandfather... an American patriot.

He eulogized his big brother just over a year ago, saying at the end, "Erma Bombeck said that, 'When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me.'" He went on to say, "You did use everything God gave you, now He gives you peace and life eternal." "You'll finally be with our Mom and Dad. Tell them we said thanks for their giving you to us." Uncle Albert, we thank them also for giving YOU to us. I know that you, Grandpap, and Uncle Alex are playing a round of golf, having a beer, and Grandma's getting some chicken soup ready for you guys. We love you and will miss you so much.

Coast Guard Hymn
Eternal Father, Lord of Hosts
Watch o'er the ones who guard our coasts
Protect them from the raging seas
And give them light and life and peace.
Grant them from thy great throne above
The shield and shelter of thy love.
Lord, guard and guide the ones who fly
Through the great spaces in the sky
Be with them always in the air,
In darken storms or sunlight fair,
Oh, hear us when we lift our prayer,
For those in peril in the air!
Grant to them Your eternal peace, Oh Lord,
For they have followed your commandment,
That No Greater Love has he, who would give up his life for another.
Amen

All our love,
Melissa, Adam, Olivia, and Owen
