I had the great good fortune to develop a warm friendship with Jim late in his life. Over the years we enjoyed talking books, sharing authors and ideas of what to read next. We also shared a sweet tooth and had many meals and dessert together, thanks to Kay. I will remember him fondly.
I had the great pleasure of teaching with Jim as my partner in a section of Senior Colloquium during my first years at Whitman. He was a wise and witty partner who was very encouraging to a new colleague. I remember him warmly, and his family is in my thoughts.
Dear Kay---we recently spoke about Jim when we both attended a film festival. As it should be. I repeated to you the wonderful love and respect I had for Jim. I took two film classes from him at Whitman. There was nothing superficial or casual about Jim when it came to movies. Wow! He pushed us to try to really understand Ingmar Bergman, to love films from India and Italy. Thanks from me, Jim, to you.
We have the best memories of dinners we shared with Jim and Kay. As a colleague Jim was among the best. He was a real intellectual who was interested in literary history as well as creative writing. He offered me advice on reading certain contemporary authors whom I had not yet read and, of course, he taught me a great deal about film. I always attended the Cinema Arts Program that he ran for years and then managed to talk to him about the film I had seen that week. In addition, we had our love of baseball to share. Half a dozen times, we drove to Milton-Freewater to watch Cub/Astro games in a bar when those games were not available in Washington.
Jim suffered too much for too long. We console ourselves by knowing that Jim is no longer suffering. We have the highest admiration for Kay who somehow managed to handle this impossible situation over all these years.

Through the sadness of losing a husband and father may your family find peace in knowing that Jim no longer suffers.
Remembering you in our thoughts and prayers.
