I can attest first hand that Joe was a great cop as we teamed up from time at Company G. That was our first station. We had a lot of great times and great laughs regarding some of our the incidents we were involved in. We would reminisce when we crossed paths. My heart felt condolences to the family.
Kathi, our heart breaks for you and your family. I was fortunate enough to know Joe for the past 10 years and play golf with him for several years. The thing I will remember the most about Joe is how he always made me feel. When you saw Joe he always made you feel like you just made his day by being in his presence. He always made me feel like I was his best friend. He will be greatly missed.
Kathy, My heart goes out to you and the kids. You both are incredible people. so sorry for your loss. BJ Woods

Such an honor and a pleasure to have known Joe! He was one of the most wonderful men I have ever met! I am saddened by his loss and send my condolences to his family. Please know my life was better because of Joe.
I had the honor and privilege to call Joe my friend and golfing buddy. We had many occasions to play golf with him and his brother Bill. Joe was always positive and upbeat and a great listener. I will miss those days we played together. He indeed was one of the best Cops I ever worked with.and will be missed by all.My thoughts are also with the entire Engler family on Joe's sudden passing. A special prayer for Kathy and all the kids...God Bless
Our sincere condolences. We just learned today of your tragic loss.
Joe was such a nice guy and we were looking forward in reconnecting when we return to Healdsburg from San Diego.
Again, so sorry. Words fail.

Dear Kathy, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My sympathy and prayers go out to you and your extended family.
Dear Kathy and the entire Engler family. Jim and I are so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was such a nice guy and Kathy, I had never seen you happier than when Joe walked into the room! He was a wonderful and kind man and will not be forgotten in this world.
What an empty spot Joe leaves in so many lives now, and what a trail of grateful, loving people he leaves behind. His heart was full of compassion, competence and energy for the good things in life, and I heard an SFPD colleague of his say once that he was 'a lot of copper,' a deep compliment. His life was a life well led, full of resilience and caring for others, and he affected so many of us,in substantial ways. I don't think I ever had a conversation with him in the last 30 or so years where he didn't mention his family and friends, and how much you meant to him, and I'm sorry for that empty spot he leaves in your loves now. I believe he's in the presence now of the only One who loves him more than we do.
Joe Engler was my hero. I never got to tell him that. It was an honor to be his friend. I loved being with him and Kathi. Wish we'd had more time together! Joe was true blue and so steady that it seems so shocking to lose him suddenly. My sincere condolences go out to the whole family. He loved you so much.
There is no doubt that Joe made the world better for having been in it. His sudden exit from our lives is a reminder to live each day as well as we can. Life is precious and fleeting.

Joe was one of my most valued friends. He was a great guy and an excellent cop.
Joe's dedication to helping other people who were suffering difficulties in their lives is well known. There wasn't anything Joe wouldn't do for a person and especially a fellow cop who was in need of help and support.
