Spc. Dennis Cullen Poulin – KIA 31 March 2011
When a mother loses her son, a part of her soul is removed that can never be replaced. I was not created in a way to lose you, Danny, and as time moves forward since you were taken from us, a part of me remains, and will always remain, the mother of a little boy, a great son, a loving brother, and a father whose son meant everything to him.
Even as a little boy, you were taking care of everyone. You seemed to have a natural ability to always be looking out for your sister and I. Even in those times you made typical little boy bad decisions, I couldn't get mad at you. You'd flash that smile you had, and I'd know your heart was in the right place. If I actually caught you doing something wrong, you never could fib your way out of it, because your smirk would give you away. I miss that smile. It was a smile that said, “Catch me if you can.”
I would always know when you'd been with friends because you'd come home wearing that beautiful smile. You loved your friends and were always the first to offer them a smile when they were down.
Your giving heart was connected to your smile. I remember that smile the day I found out you'd lost your coat. I was so angry thinking you'd just carelessly left it or had it stolen. When I finally got out of you that you'd given a girl on the street your coat because she was cold, I knew your heart was in the right place and I knew you were telling me the truth because I could see it in your smile.
You offered your smile to everyone. You were always sensitive about everyone else's feelings, and offered that smile to lift them up. You never fought. Rather than hurt anyone, you worked to straighten things out to spare other's feelings. When backed into a corner, however, you had courage to stand up for yourself.
While I will always treasure you in my heart as my own, I know your heart belonged to your son. You believed your greatest accomplishment was becoming a father, and it was the single most important thing in your life. You were scared at first, but you stepped up to take care of your son the way a father should, even though that meant having to quit school to help pay the bills. I was so very proud of you when you went back and got your GED, just as you had promised me. You were the kind of responsible role model a son should have, even though you didn't have the role model of a father to follow when you grew up.
Being responsible is why you joined the Army. While you wanted to defend your country and keep do your part to keep it safe, you mostly joined for the opportunity to help your family and provide medical benefits for your son. You volunteered to give up a year with your family and deploy to Afghanistan as a way to help them.
Even in the Army, you were taking care of everyone else, keeping them safe. You asked me to buy special strapping at the Army Surplus and send it to you in Afghanistan because your buddies needed it so they could be safe. You were always there if your buddies needed something. You even signed on for another hitch because you all promised each other you would come home together.
That's the only promise you didn't ever keep, Dennis, and while we'd give anything to have you back, we understand why you did what you did. You only wanted a better life for your son, and just like when I couldn't get mad at you for giving away your coat, I can't be mad at you now. I just miss your smile so very much.
I will keep your memory alive. I will be sure your son knows who you were and what kind of father you were. I will keep your memory alive by putting wreaths on your grave, attending memorial services, and by putting your picture on a billboard. Whatever it takes, I will do everything I can to be sure the world never forgets your smile. I was then, and still am, so very proud of you.
You make me proud to be an American, and especially proud to be a resident from Pawtucket, RI. God Bless You and your Family, and your Battalion/Company now and always.
GOD BLESS YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY

The song you sent to me when we were having a difficult conversation came on my Pandora station today. It reminds me of you so much. I can't stand it. I know that I would hate to hear your advice right now, which is probably why I need it.
I keep asking myself what I would have said differently if we could turn back time. I just want to let you know that I miss you. I can't stand the idea that you're not here anymore. I miss you so much. I just sat here today and thought about you and cried and cried. I am sorry about everything, our fights, everything. I am sorry. I miss you.

Thanks for what you've given
No one could ask for more.
May you rest with God in heaven
From now through evermore
Still missing you Hun. You gave your all for your country and will forever be a hero. I love you buddy!
You touched so many people <3 I miss you so much! I love you always <3
Poulin, I don't think I was ever able to greave over you, due to the nature of my work, and all that happened in that time frame you were stolen from us. We all promised to see your family and let them try and get an idea of you as a soldier. I dont know how any of us will be able to do that, but we will try... sometimes people will ask me about that day, and ask if I ever have any nightmares from it, but every dream with you in it is always the same; you say you're fine and get up and walk away from me. I kind of believe that in a way. Poulin, you've made us all better people for having known and lost you. Its certainly changed my life. See you on the other side man,
Danny its been 5 months today since u left us, and i still cant believe ur gone..Baby ur always in my head and i will never forget u please keep a watch over all of us we STILL NEED U..love mommy''xoxxo

Dennis our hearts were so broken the day you passed away,
You touched the lives of many in several special ways.
You were a loving, caring, loyal, protector, father, son, brother, and friend,

Dennis.. I never thought I would be signing one of these for you.. I miss you so much! We had so much planned for when you came back.. I was supposed to prove to you that I'm not "rookie" drinker anymore.. I'm never gonna have that chance now.. I will never get to tell you that even though I really never wanted you to go into the military that I was so proud of what you were doing.. you finally found something you loved to do.. and I was so happy for you. We were always there for each other since we were little.. You treated your sister like your own child.. and me, your cousin, like a sister.. I have so many memories of you.. I will never forget them.. or you. like the time we went to Rodger Williams park and and you were checking the ice on the pond and your leg went right through.. and the same day going to the playground (when it was closed) and you hoping around on those things that made the noise like a goof lol.. you were always acting crazy, so many laughs.. you were a wonderful person to anyone.. no matter if they have been in your life forever or you just met them.. you were a hero for us well before you even joined the military and you were till the day you died.. and even after that you still were saving lives.. donating organs to those who needed it.. and because of the hero you are Cindy, Sheena, and I are going to sing "if heaven was needing a hero" at your services.. its a beautiful song and it fits you just right.. I love you Danny and always will! <3

Dennis was one of the few friends I've had since middle school that I was not only still in touch with, but could not recall ever having fought with. Maybe it's the rose-colored glasses of recollection. Either way, he was a hell of a guy. I considered him my brother and so did my family, and I'm gonna miss the hell out of him.
Peace be with you Dennis.
What can I say that no one else has? My heart is broken. I can't stop thinking about you. You were so full of life, everyone loved you so much. I couldn't wait for you to come home and see you again. We had just talked two weeks ago about your party. It hurts to know that will be the last time we get to talk. I've been going through myspace and facebook messages just to save anything I have from you. I've known you since I was four years old. You taught me about boys and aliens. You always protected me and I loved seeing you when I was out because you always had to tell everyone I was like your little sister you had to watch out for. I am praying you are in better place and I am praying hard for your mom, sister and your beautiful little boy. All my love to you, your family & friends.
Hope I see you on the other side..
With love from my mom Renee and my brother Alex
The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to SPC. Dennis C. Poulin our Brother-in-Arms . To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Dennis. And to Dennis it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Dennis, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,307 military Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Dennis’ family and loved ones.

My dearest condolences to the family and all of your loved ones. I will miss you until the end of my days, as all who have known you will. rest in peace, now and forever more.

To the Poulin family,
I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Dennis will never be forgotten.
For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you .
I Salute You.

Dear Poulin Family,
My deepest sympathies for the loss of Danny. He gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country and I, for one, will be forever grateful for the price he, and your entire family, has paid so that I can live in Freedom. There are no words that can every express my gratitude except thank you. SPEC. DENNIS, "DANNY" CULLEN POULIN, AMERICAN HERO. RIP
I'm sorry that Dennis passed, but more so i am thankful that he lived.. He was a great man, and the best friend I had ever known. Honorable, admirable, and true.. He always looked out and made me more me. Almost a decade ago, he took me under his wing, and laid the foundation for who I am today. I'll never forget all that he instilled in me, and his voice echos in my dreams. He passed himself onto me, and one day I hope to offer this to his son. Nik deserves to know and have a chance to gain pieces of who his dad really was... he deserves to have the opportunity to become a reflection of the man whom I've seen in my eyes for years.. In mourning him, I've been smiling as much as crying. I've been laughing and screaming, as well as shaking and unable to move... all at once. I've decided to take his death as an awakening, rather than a void. He existed as the most influential person in my life, and I am truly shattered to see him go. However, I can't pause my life.. as shouldn't any of you. Dennis wouldn't want you to put yourself on hold for him.. no matter what. He would want us to embrace this and channel the anger/sadness/grief into that which we are passionate about. My apologies if my words hurt you. Danny is the most beautiful person I have ever met. I share with you your pain. I leave you with a shoulder to cry on/someone to speak with/anything you may need, please don't hesitate to call(508)954-1781. All of my love.
