I was hired as a faculty member at UC Davis in 1981 and I'm still here so I knew Ben well. In 1981 I was fresh out of grad school and only 29. I had read many of Ben's papers while is school and intimidated about being on the faculty with him. "How am I going to call Dr. Ben French Ben?" But of course, he was extremely welcoming and put me at ease right away. I always respected his no nonsense manner. He didn't beat around the bush. He cared deeply about the department and the well being and success of everyone in it. And he had a sense of humor. I will miss him.
After 25 years in agricultural economics, I have never met a more knowledgeable professional, a more compassionate teacher, or a better role model than Ben French. Thank you, Ben.
