U.S. VeteranDaniel Hayes McKinney III of Hyde Park, Cincinnati, Ohio passed away in his sleep on April 7, 2013. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years Judith Shapleigh McKinney, her brother Peter Shapleigh, and his four children Daniel McKinney IV, Lisa Cropp, Bart McKinney and Margo Jokovich and his seven grandchildren Dan McKinney V and Connor McKinney, Josh Cropp and Sam Cropp, Jaeger McKinney, Reagan Jokovich and Braden Jokovich. Daniel is known by family and friends as Dan, Bop Bop and by some on the squash courts - the Czar. He was born in Cleves, Ohio on December 1, 1929 to Marjorie Struble McKinney and Daniel Hayes McKinney Jr. He attended Walnut Hills High School and graduated from the Fisburne Military School in 1947 and the Ohio State University in 1951. He received his law degree from Harvard University in 1954 where he later received his doctorate. The influence in his early years by his grandfather Judge Stanley Struble shaped Dan’s legal career. Dan served in active duty in the Marine Corps. and after graduating with distinction as an honor student from the Naval Justice School at Newport, RI, was certified by the Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Navy as a Legal Officer. He retired from the Corps as a Captain in 1963. He married Judy Shapleigh in 1957 and lived in Clifton. In 1989 Dan partnered with Firooz Namei to form McKinney and Namei. He was a highly recognized attorney for his estate planning. He was one of the first Ohio attorneys to be named a Board-certified specialist in estate planning, trust and probate law by the Ohio State Bar Association Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law Specialty Board. Every year since 2003 he was designated a "Super Lawyer" by Law & Politics and Cincinnati magazines. He was fluent in Spanish and Russian and utilized his skills on behalf of clients throughout his career. He has served on the White House Conference for Small Business, and was an active leader in Cincinnati’s Sister City program with Ukraine and served as trustee and secretary for the Council of Economic Initiatives, which conducts study tours for underdeveloped countries such as Ukraine, Moldova, and the former republics of the Soviet Union. In addition, Dan served on the Council of the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Ohio. He was a past president of The Cincinnati chapter of The Ohio State University and Harvard Law School Alumni Associations. He is also a former president and trustee of the Cincinnati Squash Racquets Association. He served on the Fishburne Military School’s Visitor’s Board and regularly attended the annual alumni weekend. Dan was a member of the Cincinnati Country Club where he played squash and tennis. He was also a member of the Racket Club and University Club. His fondest times were with his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends. His legacy will be remembered by all. Service will be held Friday, April 12 at 10:00am at the Norman Chapel of Spring Grove Cemetery. No Visitation. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
