I had the good fortune to sit next to Fritz at Nuclear Power School and spend the next 18 months in submarine training with him. I recall we had to do a psychological profile and at the end, draw a self portrait. Fritz did one of his playful cubist doodles and got called back to talk to a psychologist about his self image. :) Fritz was a smart and witty guy.....was a pleasure to get know him and sorry not to see him for so many years. Rest in peace Fritz.

On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans (USSVI), we offer our sincere condolences to Admiral William and Sabra Smith and all of LT Smith's family and friends as you mourn his passing. May God whisper peace into your hearts, comfort, and heal them. We are grateful for Fritz's service to our country in the U.S. Submarine Service during the Cold War on the USS City of Corpus Christi SSN-705. To our “Brother of the Dolphin” we say … "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. May you rest in peace and may God bless your loved ones who remain. Thank you for your service to our country."

So, heavenly Father add his name to the roll
Of our departed shipmates still on patrol.
Let them know that we who survive
Will always keep their memories alive.

Bless those who serve beneath the deep,
Through lonely hours their vigil keep.
May peace their mission ever be!
Protect each one, we ask of Thee.
Bless those at home who wait and pray
For their return by night and day.

Frederick William Smith, LT, US Navy, Now on Eternal Patrol.
