James Conyers

U.S. VeteranJames W. Conyers, age 88, of Athens, formerly a longtime resident of Hamilton-Fairfield, died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 30, 2013 at the Laurels of Athens.

Born Dec. 3, 1924 in Alexandria, Virginia, he was the twin son of the late Walter & Elsie Reiff Conyers.

A graduate of Hamilton High School, he retired after 38 years of service with the B&O Railroad as a mobile agent with customer service.

He was active in youth sports in Hamilton, coaching baseball for 10 years and forming the Youth Bowling League. He was inducted into the Greater Hamilton Bowling Hall of Fame. He was a skilled baseball player (scouted by the St. Louis Cardinals prior to World War II) and after heart surgery and knee replacement, participated with the Cincinnati Red’s Fantasy Baseball Camps.

Jim was a member of the 1st St. John United Church of Christ, Washington Lodge 17 F&AM (63 years), Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati, and Campbell Gard VFW Post 1066.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theatre. He was involved in the Normandy D-Day Landing at Omaha Beach, Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of Buchenwald Concentration Camp, and served as guard to General Dwight D. Eisenhower during the Potsdam Peace Conference.

Jim is survived by his immediate family, his wife of 66 years, Doris Wuest Conyers; two daughters- Barbara (James R.) Gaskell of Athens and Ginny (Paul Smail) Vayda of Greensburg, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren- Sarah Gaskell, David Gaskell and Susan Merryman.

Beside his parents he is preceded in death by his twin brother, John Conyers.

A private family memorial service will take place at a later date. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.
