This was indeed sad and surprising news for mainframe computer systems programmers, many of whom knew and admired Rich. I met Rich at the mainframe conference "SHARE", and was so often the case with him, was warmly welcomed, becoming good SHARE-mates. When we were in Chicago I led a group to dinner at the Chicago Oven and Pizza Grinder Company. He liked it so much that he contacted me later (pre-Google) for the address so he could take his wife during a subsequent Chicago visit. My prayers go out to a great guy, and his many friends and his family who will miss him so dearly.
