Caroline and family. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

I am crushed to learn of Steve's passing. Knowing him as I do, I expect he would have said it was no fun for him either. Humor, after all, was one of his most endearing traits.

When Steve hired me to take over CCSU's troubled police department in 1991, the outgoing interim police chief, Bernie Sullivan, remarked that Steve was absolutely the best boss he ever worked for. He was on the mark, as anyone who worked with him will attest. Bernie and I, both career cops, appreciated Steve's unquestioned integrity, his intellect, his compassion and his steadfast support. Moreover, he was ahead of many in higher education in his appreciation of the risks facing colleges and universities. He recognized that public safety was an institutional responsibility rather than a task that could be delegated to a single department.

I have two regrets. One is that Steve was unable to attend my retirement party this past fall. The second is that I failed to complete and forward a letter to him before he died. It was on my agenda for this weekend when I checked my university email and learned of his passing.

As a new Director of the Student Center at CCSU, I was lucky to have Steve Mitchell as a boss. I remember the meetings we had in his office where he kept a fridge stocked with local sodas and we often talked about his many interests outside of work. His favorite soda was Moxie as I recall; appropriate for such a "straight shooting" man who told it as he say it, did not play "politics" and trusted and developed the people that worked for him. I learned a lot of valuable lessons from Steve, among them the importance of personal and professional integrity, which he had in abundance. The world is less with his passing.

I was fortunate to work with Dr. Mitchell for 3 years when I started at CCSU. He served as an inspiration. My thoughts and prayers are with you and and your family.
