Dear Nancy and the entire Haines family,
Deeply saddened to learn of the recent loss of your beloved husband, father and great friend to so many in Marblehead and beyond. Esso was truly a "Marblehead Original" whose love for all things Marblehead and especially it's people and athletic programs was constant and unwavering. Most notably it was his affection for and support of our cherished Marblehead High Football team that seemed his greatest inspiration. I think it all began during his outstanding playing days for the Magicians in the mid 40's and thankfully carried on through the rest of his entire life. Through thick and thin Esso was always there voluntarily contributing countless hours of support for his beloved Magicians both publicly and perhaps more often privately behind the scenes and without fanfare to benefit the team, it's coaches and fans. His contributions would have to be described as truly immeasurable.
I feel also for the fellow officers and members of the Magician Gridiron Club that Esso founded so many years ago. Former Magicians like Dr George MacDonald, Dick Farrell, Carl Siegel, Bobby Jackson, Evan Harris, and Jim Nye. They may have lost their dynamic leader and close friend in Esso but I trust they will more than honor his memory by vowing to continue all the programs of support for the Magicians that Esso had initiated and set in place over so many years.
I was so happy for Esso in recent years because of the success his beloved Magicians were experiencing on the gridiron. I'm sure he reveled in their victories and was most proud of the Magicians return to glory after some very difficult years. I'm most proud of the players and coaches for giving that experience to Esso before he left us. Who deserved it more. I myself will sure miss "catching up" with Esso at the Old Timers Dinner he so brilliantly initiated many years ago prior to the Thanksgiving Day game.
Again my deepest sympathies to the entire Haines family. Please try and take some measure of compfort during this most difficult time in knowing your beloved Esso left an indelibly positive impression on all of us most fortunate to have known him and his beneficial impact on so many will remain everlasting. I like to think that the powerfully positive spirit of the great Esso Haines has never really left us after all and will remain forever hovering high above the 50 yard line of Piper Field for all future Magician teams to draw upon for strength and inspiration as they strive for victory.
