On Wednesday, July 9, 2014, Monte Alan Bowens died in Stockton, California at the age of 62.

Monte was born on July 27, 1951 in Blythe, California to Roberta Brooks Bowens and Annanias Bowens. He grew up in Blythe where he attended Palo Verde High School. While in high school, he excelled in both academics and sports, particularly football and baseball. He was
a Sunkist Football All American and an All IVL Football Player. Monte also was Student Body President and Boy’s State Representative, which entitled him to the great honor of attending a legislative session in Sacramento, California. After graduating from high school in 1969, Monte continued his education for one year at The Hill School in Pennsylvania, where he earned a scholarship to attend Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While at Harvard, he continued to play football while studying economics. He graduated from Harvard in 1974.

Monte had an illustrious career in radio and print media until he retired in 2011. Throughout his life, he touched the lives of so many people. He loved fishing, hunting, cooking, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a great story teller, and he loved to share his knowledge of many subjects, including politics, sports, and history. He also shared stories of growing up in Blythe and about his Texas, Oklahoma and Choctaw roots with pride and joy. His network of relationships was extensive, and to know Monte meant that you could have access to an astounding "who's who" list of people he called friends.

Most of all, Monte truly loved his family. He often spoke of his children with a father's pride that was second to none. As a father, there was nothing he would not do for his children. Known as "G-Pop", he was a fantastic grandfather who bonded with his grandchildren instantaneously. He will be sorely missed.

Monte is survived by his wife, Maria E. Bowens; his daughter, Krietta Bowens Jones; his son, Lacey A. Bowens; his son-in-law, Terrence L. Jones; three grandchildren, Jayden A. Benoski Bowens, Nora E. Jones and Keith A. Jones; two brothers, Dennis “Paul” Bowens and Eugene Brooks; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Monte will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Frye Chapel & Mortuary of Blythe, 633 N. 7th Street, Blythe, California.
