A native of Highland, MD, David attended Atholoton High School in Columbia, MD and graduated from Marion Military Institute (Marion, AL) high school in 1981, and junior college in 1983. He earned his BS degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Georgia Tech in 1988. David was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1983. He worked as a flight test engineer for Lockheed Martin in Marietta, GA, and Douglas Aircraft at Patuxent Naval Station, MD and at Long Beach, CA, before pursuing his dream of becoming a professional pilot. He flew as a pilot for Atlantic Southeast Airline for seven years before joining Gulfstream in Dallas, TX as a test pilot. David was an avid pilot and had volunteered for years at the Army Aviation Heritage Museum in Hampton, Georgia. He was an enthusiastic collector and restorer of classic cars and enjoyed hang gliding, sailing, playing guitar, and woodworking. Survivors include his parents, Offa Shivers "Mac" and Nancy McCollum of Highland, MD; his siblings, Offa Shivers McCollum, III (June) of Marietta, GA, Eugene W. I remember David as such a warm, gentle, happy little guy. I babysat him, his brothers and sister occasionally when they were little and was so very saddened to hear this news. My thoughts and prayers go out to you Nancy, Mac, Shivers, Gene and Carolyn. What an accomplished young man David became! My husband, also a pilot, and I would love to have known him as a man. I am sure he knows how very proud of him you are and how loved and remembered he always will be. May God hold you close and give you comfort. With deepest sympathies,

I am incredibly sad to hear this news.... David was the first pilot I flew a trip with after my training as a Flight Attendant with ASA. He was so patient with me and so kind. We went on to be friends, and shared several lunches and rides in the Mustang. I will miss you, my friend. Land softly in Heaven. Prayers and hugs to the family.

I worked with Dave at Pax River over twenty years ago, and greatly enjoyed the times we spent playing guitar and cruising around in his Boss 302. Luckily I was able to see him around Christmas after many years out of touch. He will be greatly missed. I also wish to offer my condolensces to Jane Ragusa and family, as I worked with Vivan on X-31 for several years. God Bless.

I got to know Dave about twenty some years ago when we worked together on the T-45 at Patuxent River. We had lost touch but recently met up again a few times since I returned to Maryland. Dave was a warm generous guy, and will be sadly missed.

I worked with Dave twenty years ago at Pax River on the T-45A and remember him as a fun-loving, thoughtful and valued member of the flight test team. Dave was always working towards his dreams, so I'm not surprised that he ultimately "flew the line" as an airline pilot and was able to transition back into flight test.

Dave was my friend. We flew Hueys, roomed, drank and even met a few girls together. When I first met him I thought he was a doctor. He just had that look and manner. He was the kind of guy that you would be OK with dating your sister or daughter. A great aviator too.
Every time I use one of the new radios in a Huey I will think of him.

My prayers are with David's family. I did not know him, but my husband, Vivan, also perished on the plane. My heart is truly broken for all of us. May God be close to you and bring you comfort beyond measure. Praying always.

I worked with Dave at Gulfstream during the GV certification program, including time with him in Roswell, NM for the same series of field performance tests. He was a smart, very capable and talented guy with a contagious positive attitude. He was happy to be doing this type of work and was well aware of the risks involved. Nonetheless, this does not lessen the tragedy of his death. I was deeply saddened when I read his name among those who perished. I mourn with the McCollum family. God bless you.

I also worked with Reece Ollenburg (at the Bombardier Fight Test Center). It would be easier to hear this news with more anonymous names. It is with a heavy heart that I say I'm glad and feel honored to have known both Dave and Reece.

David, You were and excellent CO to me as a new Cadet and underclassman at MMI in the fall of '82. I still remember formation in front of sMurfee Hall and your Platoon Sergeant, Sandy Artman, giving you that spring loaded salute as he presented us to you...EVERY time he presented us. YOU guys were a great team. I especially appreciate how you made sure I was properly tended to when I came down with walking Pneumonia and could not even lift myself from my bunk to seek help. You and my roommate Ted Joy probably saved my life that day according to the doctor at Perry County. Thank YOU!
I am sorry to have heard about David's passing; I have to believe he was doing the thing he loved since he seemed to have set his life to it. That is some consolation I believe. Farewell David

I was walking my dogs near the airport the day of this tragic event.. I also work at the airport and remember having them come through the checkpoint on commerical flights out of Roswell.

I offer my sincere sympathy to his family and friends. I am very saddened.

I did not know David but my brother is Kent Crenshaw who also perished. My heart is broken that so many other lives were also lost. I am so sorry. They were all such outstanding men.

Dave, you were the best house mate I had the pleasure to live with at PAX. I'll miss the car parts in the garage, the late night guitar strumming on the balcony, the road trips to find used car parts, and you. You are my inspiration, my friend, my mentor and a pleasure to work with professionally and personally.
