ALAN MARTIN Obituary

Woodland Baptist is mourning the loss of a selfless man.

The Rev. Alan Keith Martin, 53, last led a service at Woodland Baptist Church on July 4.

He did that despite being terminally ill with cancer, a disease which he had fought for several years.

"Why sit around the house when I could be out there serving the Lord?" is how the Rev. Banks Corl remembered his friend and colleague who died July 15 with his family at his side.

The Rev. Martin served as associate pastor of worship arts -- music, drama and media -- for the more than 2,500 members of Woodland Baptist, 9607 State Road 70 E., for more than six years.

He was a warm-hearted, caring and outgoing man who "loved to worship the Lord," Corl said.

"The choir looked forward to the devotionals he would bring each week. That was as big as practicing the music," Corl said.

Rev. Martin hired Andy Botts right out of college in 2007 to serve as associate pastor of worship at Woodland.

"Completely selfless," said Botts in describing his mentor. "He cared more about people than he did himself. He was absolutely the kindest man I ever met. He loved his family, friends and the church."

It's a sad time at Woodland, said Botts.

"But it has brought us closer together as a congregation. It made people realize we were not just staff and coworkers but we're a family. Keith was like my second dad," Botts said.

The end came swiftly for the Rev. Martin. His wife, Lee Ann, a graphics and communications specialist for the church, kept the congregation informed of his final days through her blog.

"I have been such a blessed woman to be able to walk with him for these 30 years," she said on her blog.

Rev. Martin was born May 5, 1958, in Montgomery, Ala.

He served for more than 31 years as a worship pastor for churches in Texas, Oklahoma,Alabama,Indiana and, for the past six years, at Woodland Baptist, also known as Woodland -- The Community Church.

Last Sunday, for the last chorus of the last song, the choir leader stepped away to allow the spotlight to fall on a solitary microphone, symbolic of the missing minister.

"It was very moving," Corl said. "How do you stand and choke back the tears? But we did."

In addition to his wife, Lee Ann, the Rev. Martin is survived by two children, Joshua, who recently joined Woodland as a children's ministry associate, and Bethany, a pre-med student at Auburn University.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Thursday and the worship celebration will be at 11 a.m. Friday, both at Woodland.

The worship service will be streamed via www.woodlandlive.com.

Members of the congregation are looking forward to the celebration of the Rev. Martin's life, Corl said.

His death "leaves a big vacancy. We're confident that God will fill it," Corl added.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Montgomery, Ala.

The Rev. Tim Passmore, senior pastor of Woodland Baptist, and the Rev. Paul Strozier of Columbus, Ohio, will co-officiate.

Flowers may be sent to Woodland Church and donations may be made to The Navajo Mission Fund, c/o Woodland.

My dear sweet Lee Ann.I am just now finding out about Keith's passing. I am so sad. My oldest son, Dylan, and I were sharing some stories involving people who had shaped our lives and I began to share some stories about Keith. When I had finished I said I wonder where Keith is. Dylan said, "Dad, I think Keith passed away last year." I don't know how Dylan knew it and I didn't but he came up wih this obituary.Lee Ann, i cannot begin to tell you how much you and Keith have meant to me. You were the dearest of friends when I had no one. For me, Keith has always been the epitomy of Christ-likeness.Oh my how we used to laugh and cry. He was such a brother. i remember you having us over for supper in your home. you will never know what that meant to our family. Oh my what a worship leader. I can close my eyes and hear the choir at Valleydale. Well, anyway, I don't have to worry about where Keith is anymore. I have to say i loved that man. Wish i was more like him. Lee Ann, if i can do anything for you at all please let me know.Look me up on FaceBook. We love the Martin's. May God bless you as he has blessed us through you. Your friend, randy evers.

Lee Ann & Family
I just got the news yesterday that Keith had gone home with the Lord. May God envelope you all with only the peace that he can give during this difficult time. I did not know him personnally, but I can tell you that I was truly blessed by the beauty & passion in his voice when I would attend services. I know he will be missed by all who came across his path along this life's journey. You all will continue to be in my prayers.

To the many people who are missing Keith now, even though I didn't know him personally, I was very moved by the dedication and love he showed while visiting Woodlands Baptist. I am so sorry for your loss.

Lee Ann and family:

Just wanted you to know everyone in the Samford family are praying for you and your family at this time. Keith had such an impact on the BSU Choir ministry at Samford while I was there.
This is a huge loss and I have been encouraged by all that people have posted and written about him and his impact as a minister.
May Jesus Christ be praised.
Sincerely,
Hunter Goff Psalm 121

Keith was a wonderful worship leader. God used Keith to touch so many lives. There so many times when I myself felt discouraged with the problems going on in my life and just hearing Keith's testimony and great faith in God really lifted me up and gave me strength. Keith truely was a man of great faith and I know God used him to touch so many lives when he was going through his diffucult times just as he used him to help me. I never personally met Keith and if he had that much of an impact on me, blessed are those who actually had the pleasure of meeting and personally knowing him. LeeAnn and family, my condolences and prayers are with you. He is out of pain and in heaven singing for the Lord and you will definitely see him again. I hope you can find strength to get through these diffucult times thinking about that. Keith will be deeply missed. He was one kind, caring and very special man.

It has been many years since we last saw Keith. We watched him grow up at Eastern Hills Baptist Church in Montgomery and he was such a blessing to all who knew him and could sing so beautifully. We knew he would go on to be used in the Lord's work in a special way. We were so saddened to hear about his long battle with cancer. We are praying for you all and know God is listening to that sweet voice He has added to His choir.

The best! Keith had a fabulous balance of techinical, methodical, relational and spiritual in his leading of a choir and a congregation. None have compared since he left Birmingham. Certainly as a tribute to Keith, I will do my best to "Sing the notes closest to the words" from now on.
Love and sympathies to Lee Ann and the entire Martin family.

Lee Ann, you and your entire family are in my thoughts and prayers! I just heard through Mac Edwards last week that Keith was not doing well and then learned that he had passed away. Some of my fondest memories of Samford days are of BSU Choir under Keith's leadership. He was truly a Godly man and heaven is a richer place now with his presence. When I think of Keith, I think of him singing "There's a Light at the End of the Darkness" on the stage of the Grand Old Opry for the national BSU convention. As hard as it is to see right now, there is a light at the end of your darkness as well. I pray for God's comfort and strength for you and your family during these difficult days!

Dear Mrs. Martin,
When I was exploring whether or not Christianity was "the real deal" or not, Keith was one of the first people I met outside my little group of friends who was a Christian. He and I were 16 years old and living in Montgomery Alabama. Now, many decades later, I live on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. I have a Masters of Divinity, I am ministering in a church, and have a thriving ministry in East Africa. Keith is one of the very important people in my formative years who helped me to realize that Christianity was the real deal. He was able to convince me because, even at the ripe old age of 16, Christ was so very real to him. Your husband had an important impact on my life! I am sure there are hundreds of other people from our growing up years just like me who will not get the chance to write to you about Keith's godly influence on them, so I speak for those people as well as myself. I'm sure that the quality of life Keith lived was several times more than what most people long to live. (Lord Jesus comfort this family and fill with your love the tremendous gap left by Keith. Amen)
