Dr. Sandman was a great professor who often called on me in class to hear my point of view. It is in part, because of him that I am now still able to share my opinion in a board room or in my living room. He always seemed to want to know my perspective. He has helped me gain confidence both professionally and personally. Thank you kind Sir! I pray you are at peace. He had a jolly laugh and great wit! I regret that I let the years go by without reminding him what an impact he had on me. If someone touched your life please tell them today! Don't wait.

Dr. Sandman was the complete gentleman scholar, a force in the classroom and a friend always. Dr. Abarca called him "The Lord Joseph." He was the very picture of "notre bien aimé." I am sorry that the years have separated us, but he was one of the greats at Canisius and I will never forget him, thirty years on, his teaching or his generosity to me. What a place Canisius was with him and its all-star line up of English, modern languages, and humanities teachers--professors, yes, but always teachers. God bless and keep his soul, the soul of a splendid man and devout Catholic.

Dr. Sandman was one of my English teachers. I remember him as a gifted English professor and a very kind, joyful and likeable person. My condolences to his surviving cousins and friends.

Accept my sincere condolences on the passing of a man whom I admired greatly. Joe Sandman was my professor for two courses in the mid-sixties. His love of literature and its rich language was ever apparent. Still I have vivid recall of his sonorous baritone elevating the words of Shakespeare, enlivening the classroom in Old Main and instilling, for me, an affection for the beauty of both written and spoken words. Throughout my career as an English teacher I often referenced the inspired words of a man who was a gem in the superb English Department that Canisius College had assembled. He did what great teachers do - gave life to his subject and inspired his pupils to think and love through literature. May his family and friends be consoled through his life well lived.

My mother, Mary Hassey, was the sister of Joe Cavanaugh. Joe C. was the husband of Clara Six Cavanaugh, Joe's Aunt. I grew up knowing Joe Sandman & have kept in touch with him (although limited) through the years. I will always remember his laughter & the true gentleman he was. My thoughts are with his family.

Joe was, I'm sure a wonderful teacher for one does things well that one loves.Joe was also a wonderful student who worked with me for several years in art. It was a sharing process. I learned much from him and thoroughly enjoyed his well told stories. A consimate gentleman in both meanings of the word. Joe, you will be missed.

Professor Joseph Sandman was a wonderful man. He was warm and kind. Although extremely intelligent, in conversation, he let the other person feel more superior. His tapes of classical music swelled his library. May the angels soothe his soul with his beloved music.
