Elias Cheboud Obituary

CHEBOUD, Dr. Elias Elias died very suddenly while working outside Addis Ababa, Ethiopia doing what he loved: working for peace alongside colleagues from around the globe. Words cannot express the depth of our shock and the loss to his family, to the University of Victoria and University of Peace in Addis Ababa, and to the peace building continent of Africa, the country of Ethiopia and communities in Canada. This is a huge tragedy, both personally for all his family and friends and politically for the communities he selflessly served. Elias was a BSW graduate from UVic (1996) and in 2001 he obtained his PhD in Education at UVic. He taught here at UVic, at Dalhousie University, in the United Arab Emirates and in Addis Ababa at the School of Social Work, the Department of Gender Studies, and the Centre for Peace and Security. He influenced many fortunate students and staff in the Schools of Social Work and far beyond, through his efforts in peace building and linking UVic with his beloved Ethiopia. Elias was a faculty member at the United Nations University of Peace in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the time of his death. (See the Ring 2001 and HSD Connections 2010 for additional information). He is survived by his two good sons Sirrak and Bini and their mom Neena, his brother Eshetu and family and friends here in Canada as well as his amazing mother, his sisters and extended family in Ethiopia. There will be a memorial service to honour the life of our remarkable colleague and friend Dr. Elias Cheboud (1959-2010) at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, December 20th at the Interfaith Chapel of the University of Victoria. Colleagues, alumni, family and friends are invited to come together to remember him at the memorial event noted above. In lieu of flowers donations would be gratefully accepted for Elias' Ethiopian family and his work there. For further information contact Donna Barker School of Social Work 250-721-8036 or Professor Barb Whittington 250-721-8044 [email protected]. His close colleagues and friends around the world will do our best to continue the work of building bridges and making peace in practical, political and personal ways. 612950

Rest in peace.
I don't him personally but we learned much about heuristic research using his book as the best example. Our Canadian professor (Dr. Honore) @ Addis Ababa University used to refer to Elais' work. My Condolences to his family and friends

I just found out today that Professor Elias passed way. I am deeply saddened as he was such an amazing and warm man. He loved his family and country so much. I actually wanted to thank Professor Elias for planting the seed to allow me to obtain my MSW. I completed it this year and Professor Elias has been on my mind. My heart and thoughts go towards his wife, sons and family. Rest well and thank you for your impact in this world.

I was really shocked and deeply saddened to hear the death of Dr Elias. It is
really unfortunate and painful to suddenly miss such a VERY KIND, HUMOROUS and
DEDICATED colleague.

I knew Elias as a personal friend, brother and colleague. I still fail to come to terms with his untimely departure. Elias was a great man whose legacy will live forever. To Elias, i say, your place will be hard to fill brother. May your dearest soul rest in peace. Good people never die, they go away.

It was an honour to know Elias, and I'm saddened by the passing of a colleague who laboured for peace. Elias was an encouragement to me, and as I mourn his loss, I give thanks for the contributions he made whereever he was.

I had the extreme good fortune to be taught by Elias at UVic in the summer of 2006 while pursuing my BSW degree. His teachings changed my world view and my life, and I thank him for making me a better social worker today. During the course of the class, we discovered that his son Bini and my daughter Jacqui were friends. It was Bini who asked Jacqui to let me know the very sad news of Elias's sudden passing. My condolences to the family, and I was sorry to miss the memorial service, as I didn't know at the time the very sad news. If there is a Heaven, believe me Elias is in it!

I salute Elias as a hero both for Canada and Ethiopia. He sought justice and governance for his country and everybody, learned the values and ideals of Canada and went to Ethiopia to translate these values to his people through the UN programme funded by peace loving Countries like Canada, Norway, Switzerland, etc. He died in doing so and opened some eyes. May he rest in peace
