Elsie Schroeder Obituary

Elsie M. Schroeder
97, passed away peacefully at her home, Saturday, May 12, 2012. She was born April 14, 1915 to Mary (Weckesser) and Edward Krites. She grew up in the North Lawrence area. As a child, she attended school in a horse drawn wagon. She graduated from Washington High School in 1933. As a young woman, she played softball with the "Sheak's Ten". She was a reporter for the Evening Independent going from house to house collecting news from the Urban Hill area. She married Elmer H. Schroeder in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1990. She worked with her husband in the cement block business in Canal Fulton and Orrville, and in Dalton as the Gulf Oil distributor. She retired as a receptionist from the Apple Creek Developmental Center, working there from 1963-1979. Elsie was a Hospice volunteer for 10 years and was active in the Northwest Stark Senior Center and the Hill and Hollow Garden Club. She was a lifetime member of the Canal Fulton Heritage Society. Elsie was generous and donated money to community groups such as the police and fire departments, the library, schools and St. John's Lutheran Church. She liked to visit and financially contribute to the Barberton Seventh Day Adventist Mission. Her motto was: "What you do for others stays here on earth; what you do for yourself goes with you." In 2008, she was named Citizen of the Year by the Canal Fulton Firefighters Association. She was a member of the Victory Bible Church in Canal Fulton. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Art, Emerson, twins, William and Walter, Ralph and sisters, Evelyn Rupp and Florence Nusbaum.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann (Vern) King of Dalton: son, Timothy (Deborah) Schroeder of Herndon, Va.; along with three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She will be remembered as a caring, loving person who wanted to maintain her independence and activities until the end, which she was able to do.

Elsie's 97th birthday party at Canal Fulton Library

It was a great privilege to have known someone so dear as Elsie; a most amazing lady with a loving spirit, a great example of the way in which one should live their life. Elsie was not only a personal friend to so many of us but a true “Friend” to the library throughout the many years. She was a lifetime member of the “Friends of the Canal Fulton Public Library” and a Trustee of the organization from its inception.

We wish to share our gratitude, honoring her and her devotion to our community on the “Memory Wall” of “her library” by our initial donation to her scroll.

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal”.

Mary Ann and Vern and families, You have lost a loving mother and friend. May God fill the void you are feeling with His love. He never leaves nor forsakes us-in times like these. May He put His loving arms around you, and give you peace.

Elsie was very special to my parents, as they knew each other from childhood. My Dad who passed away last March 2011 often visited her who drove up from Stockport,Ohio. They'd go out to lunch and make a day of it. Last year about this time my brother Roy, his wife Peggy, and I took Elsie to visit my Dad's grave site. Her detailed memory of years past was amazing. We will miss her.
