Wilbur Eggleston Obituary

Wilbur

Eggleston

Asheville - Wilbur Eggleston of 32 Hillside St. died Thursday, June 23, 2011. A native of Elizabeth City he was a son of Wilbur Casper Eggleston and Rosa Cole Eggleston. Both parents preceded him in death.

Mr. Eggleston joined Corner stone Baptist Church at an early age under the direction of Rev. J. McRay and served as a junior usher. He was a graduate of Moore High School and attended A&T State University beginning in 1941. He withdrew for approximately two years when as a taxi driver he came in contact with Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and others who helped him develop as a student and person concerned for his fellow man. In December 1947 he graduated from A&T State University and was employed at the university as an assistant in the engineering/trades Dept. and also worked with the Railway Express. When a position became available in Canton he came to look at the new Reynolds School and was immediately hired by Andrew Hutchins, then superintendent. They were looking for someone who could coach football and handle academic courses as well. He accepted the position at Reynolds and at the same time pursued his master's degree. When integration was only a token effort, he enrolled at NC State University in Raleigh at which time he could not sleep on campus. He came to Canton in 1948 and helped put the finishing touches on the Reynolds building and grounds. At Reynolds he coached, drove the team bus, coached drama, taught math (all areas), physics, drafting, art trades and assisted the principal in disciplinary matters. He was instrumental in integrating the stadium by deliberately failing to divide his fans with a rope. They have been sitting together ever since. In 1966 he transferred to Pisgah High School where he taught Introduction to Industry Carpentry and Math. He retired in 1983.

He joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church soon after moving to Canton where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, treasurer, Chairman of the building committee and trustee board, as well as other duties needing his expertise. He and his students built the Baptist Church and pulpit furniture.

In the community he was involved in many, many areas serving on boards and participating in community projects. He was a member of the YMI Cultural Center Board of Directors, the local Recreation Board of the Town of Canton, the Haywood County Health Board, Dept. of Transportation Board, Board of Accreditation of Haywood County School System and served two terms as president of the Canton Civitan Club. He was often called upon by civic leaders in matters of public concern and was instrumental in promoting the causes that are beneficial to children such as scholarships, academic and athletic. He was an active member of the A&T Alumni Association, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, the Masons and Waynesville Missionary Baptist Assoc. Surviving are his wife, LaTiece Roberts Eggleston; sons, Robert Earl (Kathleen) of Canton, Wilbur Eugene (Cynthia) of Durham and David Karl of Fayetteville; daughters, Deborah L. Eggleston-Clark (Henry) of Garner, Sandra L. Eggleston Chestnut (Mallory) of Boston, MA and Carol D. Eggleston of Columbia, MD; twelve grandchildren, five great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Viewing will be Monday at 10 a.m. until Noon service hour in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Private interment will be in Alexander Chapel Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hart Funeral Service. An online memorial register is available at www.hartfuneralservice.com

I wish to send my sincere condolences and prayers to Mr. Wilbur Eggleston's family. I did not know Mr. Eggleston, but I feel in my heart that I have known him all of my life. It's rare that you read about a role model who always kept hope alive for the next generations to follow. I am member of the Free and Accepted Masons in California. I am sure that Mr. Eggleston had a hand in directing the movement of the Free and Accepted Masons from many years gone by. I am going to make a motion that Mr. Eggleston's accomplishment be added to our archives and that he will never be forgotten! May God continue to bless his family and keep them strong, forever!!!

Mr. Eggleston was a very influeintial person in my entire family's lives. He was known as my "uncle gettin' about." He was always on the go, but never to busy to lend a helping hand in the community. He will truly be missed.

My prayers and my deepest sympathy to the Eggleston family. A special note to Robert, Eugene, and Debbie. I was not a student of Mr. Eggleston at Pisgah High school, but it seemed as though everyone came in contact with him while attending classes there. His outstanding character was reflected in the three of you and I am certain the same is true of your younger siblings. God bless you and your entire family in this time of grief. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
