March 31, 2013

Having been notified of all the kind postings to Bill's (Grumpy's) guest book, I have read every one of them and I wish to add this to my earlier comments.
With his passing I have lost a long time friend, Bill as I knew him, he and I went to the same high school he was a grade ahead of me. I first meet him in 1948, he used to haul me home from school in his Model A Ford. He was I am sure the brightest bulb on the tree when he was in high school. I knew his family he knew mine, he was known as Jiggs when he attended Cornell.
He later had a 1938 Chevrolet two door, in the dead of winter I found him in the barn with a kerosene lantern advancing the cam timing. 1951, he won a new Chev 4 door sedan at the American Legion fair, shortly thereafter this sedan had two carburetors and advanced cam timing.
He was forced to leave Cornell after the brutal murder of his father, he and I worked together and began drag racing together some time in the early 50's. We had a D gas type that used to be a 1939 Chev coupe. In 1955 he bought a new Chev Convertible and quickly made some modifications and drag raced it, with good results, he was hooked.
He was in my wedding, however marriage separated us as drag racing on my part was now from a spectators view point, as family and business prevailed. However we kept in touch, one evening in 1963 he stopped by my house for coffee. During his visit he asked if I wanted to go to Florida with him for the 12 hour Sebring race, I said when? He replied right now, this was Bill, spur of the moment. My wife had no objection, he and I left and spent ten days like old times, friends forever.
Years later we moved to Florida, Bill and I still communicated and visited each other as well, of course by now he was very involved with drag racing. My wife and I went to his 70th birthday party, in West Chester. The party was great he was great, he had more friends than one could imagine, everyone was happy. We had breakfast with him the following morning and agreed to keep in touch.
I visited with him in June 2010, after losing my wife to cancer and he seemed different, not the Bill I had known. I was troubled, friends for all these years what was different? I did not know at that time he had medical issues, he never mentioned it.
Later talking with his sister Liz she told me of his medical problems and I understood why he was so distant. He was simply too proud to bring it up. In view of his passing I have lost my oldest friend, a friend when you needed one, that was the Bill (Grumpy) I knew. And I am grateful for his friendship all these years.
My apologies to anyone that thinks this is too much, but it is memories I have after the loss of a long time friend, I just wanted to share them.

Bill Jenkins was one of three heroes in my life even though I never shook his hand. When I read he had studied mechanical engineering that was all I needed to select what I would study in college. A few years ago I called him out of the blue to tell him of his unknown influence on me and to ask some engineering related questions. I found him to be quite cordial and informative. It was the only time we would speak and I am glad we did.

My prayers to his family and thanks to Bill for the education. I will miss you.

When I first started out in Pro Stock Motorcycle, I decided to make most of the engine modifications to my Harley-Davidson, based on PS car technology. Fortunately there was Grumpy's book (my bible) to help guide me in that direction. I was privileged to be able to call him from time to time and he would always refer to me as the guy with the cylinder heads that sat on top of the pipes. A concept he rightfully could not condone. Where was the support to prevent cylinder distortion?
Rest in peace Bill and thank you for the fastest gas powered HD in the country (1977 to 1983).

As soon as I quit driving and went to work for the NHRA, I got a call from Grump (surprised the crap outa me!) He asked if I had any pull yet in getting him a Sponsor Credential for all events. For years, he'd have to beg and jump thru hoops to get a ticket to get in any event. He'd been told NO, because GM didn't have a "Racing Program." I asked him if he had any paperwork from GM that I could show to the upper folks. How about he sends a copy of a wide open purchase order to Bill from Vince Piggins/ GM Parts, that says "test to destruction."
That was the last time Grump had to ask for a credential from NHRA.
A year or so later, I'm co-ordinating the "Winners Circle Photos" at Columbus; and the power goes out! Within moments, we see an old motor home come rumbling down the race track towards us - It's Grump and his lovely wife. He's got all kinds of lights on, parks his rig; gets out, and says 240, thought you might need some help...We finished up and all of us were still in awe of what happened! Rest in peace my friend,
See you on the other side.
