What a loss. I didn't find out until over a month after she was gone and will always be sad that I wasn't at her memorial . She had kept the Prairie Project going with her support and that helped so many of our Gililland children . She will be greatly missed and I feel so fortunate to have known her. Jane weaver

Discovering that Suzy had passed away was staggering. After moving to Austin I had stayed in touch with Suzy occasionally, and had just seen her last spring down at the Wildflower Center and she was in good spirits and as feisty as ever! Her great work will live on, as will her memory and the dedication to children and the natural world that she inspired in all of us.

When I think of Suzy, I think of peace, but I also think of being "outrageous". She encouraged that. I loved that about her. Calm and peaceful Suzy, pushing others of us to be our wacky selves. Recently, a person on our team at REAL School Gardens commented that a staff development Suzy helped lead with drums was incredibly engaging, but also very tiring. My response was, "Suck it up and get some stamina." That wasn't a very nice thing to say, but Suzy knew I was just teasing and she laughed so hard she almost choked. I liked that onery side. Thanks, Suzy.

Suzy fought a courageous fight against her cancer just as she did in all aspects of her life. We will always remember her love and wonderful smile. She will be missed. Joyce, Kelley and Kathryn Rainwater

Though I know Suzy suffered the last 9 years, I also know that she would not have wanted to miss the incredible life experiences she's had in that time: watching her work blossom into something national and huge, knowing her grandchildren, always expanding her circle of friends. Will miss you Suzy, Happy Trails, Vivia

The warmth she exuded was absolutely contagious. At the REAL School Gardens offices or within the REAL People community, we always felt better just being around her.

Suzy brought the best out in people through her quiet, graceful example. Everything that she did was "intelligent, creative, finely crafted and soulful." She set the bar very high for all of us and worked just as hard to keep the momentum going so that excellence could be obtainable, as it often remains just a dream for most.

What will I miss most? It’s the "heart part" – the giving of herself in such generous ways and at all times. She not only spoke about serving children and honoring educators with the power of the heart. She worked tirelessly to that end and taught us all to do the same. Her physical presence will be missed by REAL School Gardens, but her spirit will always remain in all that we do to carry on her legacy of serving children.

Jessica,
I will never forget as long as I live your mother and her famous Romper dresses that we were all so jealous that she designed for you and us-although you always had the best selection :) Even though I didn't get to see her in years, I will never forget her and what a sweet and gracious women she was..as well as tolerant of us and our escapades on Windsor. Makes me smile thinking about her pulling up to get you in the black Maxima with the Great Pyranise blocking her view in the car...miss you too and please know that you and your family are in my prayers. Love you!

I had the privilege of meeting Suzy at a REAL School Gardens meeting last year. This was the only time I met her, but her passion and zeal were clearly evident. I know many other people whose lives Suzy touched, and everyone I know only has the very best to say about her. A genuine, sincere person who truly made a difference. Thank you, Suzy, for all you did for students, for this earth, and for everyone whose life you touched. You have left a living legacy, and you will be greatly missed and always remembered.

No one could deny the spirit in which Suzy embraced her love of learning and the gift of sharing that love with others! Many years ago Suzy came to the campus of Treetops School to help us develop the outdoor learning experience on our wooded grounds. What fire and excitement enveloped! Her enthusiasm for life and laughter was always contagious. Peace be with you.

I first remember Suzie from first or second grade at Westcliff Elementary. She had a handful of purple violets and she let me sample their fragrance. I had heard of violets, but in the 50's, during the drought, I don't think many people tried to grow them in Ft. Worth. In the last few years we would see each other on occasion at BRIT or REAL garden activities. I will miss her support and knowing she is in our world doing her good works. Surely the streets of heaven are paved in flowers not gold.

In our brief encounter, Suzy touched my heart and soul in a wonderful way, and I came away changed by the experience. The ripples of hope Suzy has created continue to grow and change lives for the better. Suzy will live on in our hearts, and in the work she began, and she will continue to spread an elegant sufficiency to many, many more through her legacy of hope, generosity, and honoring the best in all of us.

The best gifts at Christmas were those given by my aunt Suzy. They were gifts given in honor of us, but helped those that needed it more. Each year was a new and inventive charity that had a special way of helping others, just like Suzy.

October 6, 2009

I met Suzy when she was a medical technology student at Harris Hospital and I was an instructor there. Her beauty, inner and outer, and her intelligence were undeniable. Soon we were fast friends, playing endless games of tennis at the family ranch; I rapidly grew to adore her mom and dad as I missed my own. That was in the late 1960's.

As the years passed, our paths have crossed and re-crossed. She has never left my consciousness and the wonderful memories of our early friendship remain vivid. She was unique and immensely talented and passionate about everything important. I will miss her.

Suzanne was my fifth grade student at Westcliff Elementary School in l954-55. She was brilliant, fiery, funny, and engaging. Hers was a class of wonderful pupils remembered with love by a young teacher...recalled fondly by one now retired. My thoughts are with Richard, Tom, Kathleen and Suzanne's children and grandchildren.

Suzy's focus was outward. Sure, she took the time to do the things she believed would help heal her, but her dedication to the concerns of others was key to her long tenure with a deadly disease. The wellbeing of her family, first, followed closely by all the disadvantaged children of the world was her mission and that mission sustained her.
She was human, too. Her impatience and frustration with what she perceived as selfishness, venality, laziness and just plain wrong thinking were well known by those close to her and by others who happened to be obstructing her mission. Rather than antagonize these offenders, her irritation tended to engender in them both respect and the desire to mend their ways in order to please her.
She was instrumental in helping so many that her legacy will continue long after the rest of us have “shuffled off this mortal coil.”

So long, Sis

Love,
