Jay Ehle Obituary

Jay Clarence Ehle passed away at 93 on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011. Funeral: 2:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 18001 Lake Ave., Lakewood, Ohio 44107. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church or Kenyon College, Office of Development, Gambier, Ohio 43022. Jay was born March 25, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio, the only son of Clarence E. and Hazel Sutton Ehle. He spent his working career at Cleveland Builders Supply Co., from which he retired as president in 1984. He was also chairman of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority. Based on his experience in this position and interest in its history, he authored "Cleveland's Harbor." He was also on the board of the St. Lawrence Seaway, a position to which he was appointed by then-President Clinton. He served as commodore of the Cleveland Yachting Club and on many other civic and corporate boards. Jay and his wife, Janet Greiner Ehle, moved to Fort Worth in 1995 to be close to family. Jay was preceded in death by his daughter, Judith Jayne, and his wife, Janet. The Family would like to thank the staff of James L. West and Community Hospice for their thoughtful and professional care. Survivors: Sons, James L. Ehle and wife, Margaret, and Jay S. Ehle and wife, Nancy, of Fort Worth; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Sincere sympathy to Jay's family from one of Jay's distant maternal cousins. We enjoyed many wonderful years of correspondence regarding our joint ancestry. He had the most beautiful penmanship and he enjoyed writing by hand, rather than by the more modern texting. Thus, I became well acquainted with his family, on paper. I considered him a great friend and pen-pal and I will miss him.

My prayers are with the family. What a remarkable life. I loved "Cleveland's Harbors" of which he authored. May Light Perpetual shine upon Jay and upon all the souls of the faithful departed. Amen.

Jay was from a generation that produced a few select individuals that are not easily forgotten. He was a gentlemen in every sense of the word with a keen interest in his fellow man and his accomplishments. Jay immeasurably helped me in the self construction of my first home via credit at CBS and suggestions that were well received. My condolences to the Ehle family and God speed Jay....

While working for Mr. Ehle's son, Jim, at Chemical Lime I became acquainted with Jay and learned to appreciate his quick wit and sense of humor. We shared jokes and laughed together on several occasions. Thinking about him brings a smile to my face even now. My husband and I send our condolences to the entire Ehle clan...a most wonderful group of people.

I worked with Mr. Ehle at the Port Authority as the Public Relations Director. He was one of the most gracious, considerate and caring individuals I have ever met. A true gentleman in every sense of the word. I had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with him and his wife at a Port Authority convention in the Bahamas. I remember him booking a taxi and told the driver to take us off the beaten path and to places the only the locals know about. What a wonderful afternoon!
My deepest sympathies to his friends and family. You have lost a great man who left a great impression with those he met and worked with.
