For Jeffrey...a great
keyboard player.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

growing up, carter was one of the nice guys. not a quality always appreciated then. but he was genuine, the real thing. enviable. like stacie, i feel so lucky to have grown up in derby, kansas. i have fond memories of carter then and wish i had more recent ones. to ken and judy: you are inspiring. you have handled yourself with amazing class and dignity in your time of grief, in a very public way. my heart goes out to you.

Wow. I clicked on the guest book on a whim and am so overwhelmed to see all the people who signed it. As incredibly difficult as all of this has been, it was the Derby contingency who came to the funeral that held us all up. For those who remember Carter from the old DHS or El Paso days, I can only say that even more impressive was the man he became. The adult Carter was more than I ever imagined he would grow to be. There is a part of me that will never be the same, but I love that he is still touching lives. One thing I have learned...I am so glad I grew up in Derby, Kansas. I am so glad many of the names listed here have been a part of my life.

My heart and prayers go out to the friends, family and loved ones of Carter. We had only recently reconnected over the last year and had plans to catch up the next time i was in Dallas. He was such an amazingly talented young man with so much to offer. I will always think of him down in front of the our Philharmonic choir at Derby, pounding out those parts while always keeping us laughing, making his faces, etc to make things "a little more interesting." Goodbye Carter.....We will all miss you.....

Carter, you will be missed. From all of your friends who grew up with you in Derby, to all of your friends in your musician's circle, we know what kind of a person you truly are...kind, funny, talented, goofy... I am proud to consider you one of my friends. I will miss you.

Carter. What an amazing person! I saw him perform with Edie Brickell twice here in Washington, D.C. and always got a kick out of seeing him perform. But is wasn't until Edie took one line from the audience and made up a song on the spot, with Carter supporting from the keyboard that I realized what an amazing musician he had become. I just liked him because he was my brother's friend and we grew up together in Derby. This is a tragedy for everyone in Derby and for everyone who knew Carter. But especially for his parents. All our prayers are with them today at the funeral.

Carter was a great inspiration to many people. He will be missed. I cant tell you how many great conversations we had. I spent hours listening to him sing. He made a huge impact on my life. To his parents thank you for the gift that Carter was. He is one of the few people I know that changed lives for the better.

Carter was one of my dearest friends. He was quite simply the most talented person I ever met, and one of the most humble. He never looked down on anyone, but everyone looked up to him. You will forever be remembered as one of the greats.

What an incredible loss.Carter and I were only casual friends during our last years in high school; although we did share many of the same friends.I will never, ever forget the late nights spent in the culvert in Derby where many of these friends gathered to share in the making, singing and playing of truly amazing music. Although I did not regularly participate, I was a witness to Carter's natural brilliance on many occassions. He was the reason why we were all there...and yes, the cops did show up at least once. Rather ironic. A bunch of guys singing down under the street...they were easy on us. I still have some old recordings of his; some solo material he recorded during our college years as well some originals from the culvert back in '91. I've played the tapes a thousand times over the years...almost completely worn out and now they're priceless. His gift was immeasurable - boundless. To us...back in '91, he was iconic. He still is. He's gone...but not too far away. In fact, I just listened to him today and I think he's doing just fine. Farewell my friend...

There are no words for such a tragic event. For many years of friendship, from playing great music together to rooming together in Germany, and even conversing like old friends at our 10-year after many years apart, some great memories will always be cherished. For Carter's family, know that our hearts beat with yours.

Our son David was Carter's friend through Derby schools and at SMU, and they remained friends as their creative careers took paths to different cities. Following Carter's career has been a source of pleasure for us. It was exciting to see him on David Letterman, his lanky frame visible in the shadows behind Edie Brickell. That he was gifted was apparent from grade school days. Never could we have imagined such an ending for his story. We pray for Carter's family, friends and all those for whom Carter made music come alive.

Carter played the most beautiful 12-string electric guitar on my song during a studio session last week. It was the only time I met him. I am devastated and pray for his family.

Carter and I went to JR/SR high and took piano lessons together. He was a talented musician and it's unfortunate most will never get a chance to experience that talent.

My thoughts are with his family and friends in Texas, he'll be greatly missed.
Carter was an exceptional guy, even as a child you could tell how talented and creative he was. In sixth grade, he brought a little eletronic keyboard to school and recreated the song "Axel F" on it. We were so impressed, we badgered him to play it over and over. He was more than just a talented musician, I remember him as considerate, smart, friendly and often goofy.
Rest in Peace, Carter.

I am truly thankful that a good friend turned me on to Sorta and that I was able to see them live three times before Carter’s untimely passing. He was a very talented musician who touched a lot of people’s lives with his music and his persona. Never have the words, “Strange and sad, but true...” rang more poignantly today as I read this story.
