I had Mr. Goddard as my social studies teacher back when I was a student at Fulton. I am now 26 years old and have thought many times how he was doing over the years as he was one of my favorite teachers. I loved his sense of humor. I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing and sending condolences to all.
Barbara, I am deeply sad to hear about Coach's passing. I love you both. I will always remember our great times coaching together at Fulton Jr. High. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. Thank you for my letter. I was shocked and still crying today about it.
Coach Goddard was so passionate in his endeavors. I've known him for many years but his biggest impact in my life was his coaching my boys at Indy West. I will be forever grateful that my boys were able to experience his coaching and the fruits of his labor in the coaching from others. I know their coaches were who they were because of Goddard's influence. I thank God for the opportunity CJ had to be neighbors at st. V. My condolences. Grief is hard I well continue praying for Mrs Goddard and their wrestling boys.
My deepest sympathies!!! Knew him in Greensburg - he graduated a year ahead of me.
Mr. Goddard you were truly the best of the best as far as a friend, coach, teacher, role model, inspiration. It was a privilege sir. Thank you, D.Pemberton
The last few times I met with Al (at a watering hole, of course), he always said I needed to learn to relax and enjoy retirement! It has taken a while, but I am getting there! Happy to say I have spend many years working with Al and appreciate all he has done in life for a lot of people.
My condolences to brothers Steve and Phil and wife Barbara. I knew Alan since when we were both very young as neighbors in Greensburg. I am presently in Florida right now and am sorry I cannot make it back for his services and celebration of his life. Please know Steve, Phil and Barbara are in my thoughts and prayers. Bruce
Barbara I'm so sorry for your loss and a great loss for the whole Ben Davis/ Westside community. I have the best memories and so many funny stories from high school and our trip to Europe! Alan was a mentor, father figure and friend to hundreds of kids. He will truly be missed!
Barb, know that you are in my thoughts and prayers, Slick was such a loving and giving man that will be missed by many...
I always enjoyed our conversations, and respected your thoughts or opinions.I'm glad I got to know you.
You will be greatly missed. By far the best coach I have ever had. You always believed in all of you wrestlers and students. Very giving ...I remember when I couldn't get the money to join Indy west so you put up your own money just so I could wrestle that year. No one can fill those big shoes of yours coach. Rest in Heaven coach....Center Mat !
World History had to be one of the best classes I ever took in junior high school. Mr. Goddard made it so much fun . Prayers are with the family at this time.
Mr. Goddard was one of my all time favorite teachers! He also was an excellant coach. As a cheerleader for Fulton and Matmaid he was truly an inspiration to us all! Bless his family thru this difficult time and know that he is soaring with the Angels to watch over his students. RIP Coach

You will forever be in MY HEART Mr. Goddard, aka Coach G. Rest in Heaven, you will be missed. All the wonderful memories at your house and Billy Oneill's will be cherished. I am so glad I ran into you and Mrs. Goddard and gave you a big hug. Love You.
Barbara and family, My heartfelt condolences in regard to your loss of Alan. I just returned from Florida and had no idea that Al had been ill. Al was a class act throughout his career and we were fortunate to have had him as a teacher and coach in MSD Wayne. I have always held Al in high esteem and will always hold my memory of him dear to my heart. I am so saddened by his loss to all. Warmest Thoughts and prayers to all of his family, colleagues, ahtletes and friends. love & hugs, Pris Dillow Retired Athletic Director - BDHS
Coach trusted, challenged, and supported me and many other young men in the the most important times in our lives. He was a great mentor. His tough love helped make boys into men. I still have a love for our sport today because he plucked me out of the hallway and believed I could do it. We were HIS kids. I was one of hundreds. Much love!
My condolences to Barbara & family. I am grateful for having known Mr. Goddard while attending Fulton. He really cared about his students and athletes. I especially enjoyed our many conversations about music & guitar.
I enjoyed talking with Coach whenever I had the good fortune to do so.
Heart felt sympathies go out to the family. I am thankful that I got to reconnect with Goddard a couple years ago. Now this St. Patricks Day I will be especially remembering him at The Golden Ace!
To teach is to touch a life forever. May the memories leave a smile on our heart.
Mr Goddard was by far one of my most favorite teachers when I was in school. Before I even had him as a teacher I got to know him because I would grade papers for him. My prayers to his family.
It saddens me to see the passing of Mr. Goddard. Even to this day when I can remember or cite a history tidbit, I always thank Mr. Goddard quietly for keeping my interest in his class back in/around 1996. It's been many years since we last saw each other but he was a man that made an impact in my life, either through school or an off-duty ear to listen, and I'm so sorry to hear that he has passed. My family's deepest condolences to his wife and family and thank you for sharing him with us <3
Coach Goddard, Thank you for being a positive influence for me and my brother. It came at a time that really mattered in our lives. You will be missed. Gabe
My deepest sympathy he will be missed. Thank you for all the lives you touched
Met Al through mutual friend and also while he was head coach at Ben Davis for the wrestling team. He was a true teacher, always getting the best out of every person he met. He will be missed our thoughts and prayers are with you Barb during this difficult time. Scott Hibbard
In deepest sympathy and appreciation for all that did for the students at Fulton and Ben Davis High School. Especially for your belief in Kristen, resulting in her being elected "National Mat Maid" of the year. Rest well, your time on earth was well spent.
I am so sad to here of your loss. He was a great teacher. I was one of his students from Fulton. He was the only teacher that made history fun for me.
Mr. Goddard was a great Social Studies teacher. I was in 8th grade when I had him in Fulton Junior High. You were fun and also strict which balanced the life of your class. You will be missed! R.I.P Mr. Goddard
Alan was a truly wonderful man. He was so kind and caring. It was a pleasure to have Alan and Barb as neighbors on Clifford Rd. We have missed both of you since the move. Barb, our prayers are with you. I know The Lord will help you through this most difficult time. If you need anything at all, please don't hesitate to let us know. Hugs from both Jack and me.
Barbara, Our hearts are heavy as we mourn Alan's passing. It was only a month ago when we saw you and he seemed to be doing better. Alan was such a great tour guide and we greatly enjoyed our trips to Europe. Alan was so helpful when my passport was stolen, and he accompanied us to the American Embassy in Paris. Of course Hank remembers all of the years they taught together at Fulton. We're in Florida and so sorry that we will be unable to attend the visitation and funeral. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Fondly, Hank and Linda
Al was a good friend, fellow teacher, and travel companion. I will always remember sharing Cuban cigars and great beer with Al in Indiana and four European countries. Al was a very passionate person. He was passionate about his students, teaching, wrestlers & coaching. He was also passionate about traveling & sharing his love of different cultures with anyone who would listen. Al Goddard will definitely be missed by anyone who was lucky enough to know him.
My condolences to Barb and all who loved Al. He was a great guy who always made me laugh. It was a privilege to know him as colleague and friend. Chuck Hibbert
Mr Goddard made it very easy to learn and enjoy class at the same time. He was a dear teacher, coach and friend to many. My sincere condolences and heartfelt thoughts and prayers. May God Bless your precious family.
Barb, My heart and prayers go out to you. Alan was such a kind and wonderful person. He leaves many great memories for all of us growing up in Greensburg especially in high school. Alan knew no strangers, he was so kind to everyone. As I read the other tributes to him I see the impact he had on so many young lives. He is the true definition of a "GreatTeacher and Great Coach". He will be missed beyond words.
He was a very good man to help my daughter and her boyfriend.
Mr. Goddard was my favorite teacher. I remember going back to Fulton to visit him after I left for college. Its sad he passed away so young.
Let all of us who had the great privilege of having known "Coach" remember what he instilled in all of us that he taught, from the good values to the incredible teamwork. He made everyone realize that a team could conquer more than any 1 person. Through his years he coached many kids into champions and mentored many more into outstanding men.Thank you for all that you have done and may god help your family through this tragic loss.
I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Goddard's passing. I'm a former Fulton Falcon and went on one of his Europe trips in June 1989. I have so many fond memories of that trip.
Many fond memories from four years of English in high school and the presidential election. We debated in Geometry class. Always looked forward to seeing Alan at class reunions. Had a nice visit with Barbara at the reunion in 2012. Never forget
Mr. Goddard was an outstanding coach, mentor and friend. I have numerous fond memories of him both as my coach and years after. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to Barbara who was an awesome supporter of his coaching career and to all of his family
All my thoughts a prayers with you family
I feel so privileged to have known you, been your student and to have called you a friend. Enjoy this next journey Mr. Goddard! I will miss you.
Hearing of Coaches loss has truly hurt my heart. I can't begin to say how much of an impact coach had on my life and what he meant to me. He always was in my corner, even in politics. I have to think that a man who touched hundreds of lives for the better, lived the best kind of life a man could live. I'll celebrate your life and keep your memories alive. #Fulton #BD03 #Wrestling
Alan you were a great person, teacher, and coach. You are going to be deeply missed. Rest in Peace Timothy D. Martin Ben Davis High School Class of 2000
Our family met Alan and Barbara when our son Scott Brannon, decided in 7th grade that he was going to start wrestling about 1989 or 90. He stayed with it all through Jr. High and HS. Barbara you got me to do pairings for the Indy West Tournaments. So we spent a lot of time involved in this wonderful sport with wonderful people. Alan Goddard gave his life to teaching these young men and many young women, more than just a sport and sportsmanship. I am honored to have known you first as Coach Goddard then as my friend Alan. We enjoyed our talks on the subjects we agreed on. You will be missed very so very much by so many. May you rest in peace.
Best wrestling coach ever, taught too many lessons on being a good man, he was a great man and will always rest in heaven
Al was a great friend, I will miss him very much. Barb was such a great supporter of his in everything he did. May God be with you in these days to come.
I coached wrestling at Speedway Jr. High and Speedway HS when Allen was coaching in Wayne--He was always an outstanding coach and also friendly to every one--His coaching ability was outstanding and he will be missed--Rick Haug
Mr. Goddard was an awesome teacher and person. He made Social Studies interesting and more understandable. I am so sad to hear of this. My heart goes out to his family n friends. He will be missed.
Coach Goddard will always be a person who I have the utmost respect for. He taught me in more ways than just school and sports. He taught me about me and that is better than anything I could have ever learned in a classroom or on the wrestling mat. Thank you Coach. You will be missed.
I think I can say that if it was not for the values that Coach Goddard instilled in me as a young man, I would not be where I am today. You will be missed coach G.
You will be missed!!! Thanks for the memories!!!
He was an awesome Social Studies teacher! I may not have known him as "Coach" but he was my Teacher in the 8th Grade at Fulton. He touched so many of us at Fulton as both teacher and coach. His wisdom is left behind in the minds and hearts of all who had him. Barbara, know that he is with the Angels and is looking down and smiling.
Had Mr. Goddard in 'Current Events' as a freshman @ Fulton. One of the clearest memories i have of that year is when he pulled a T.V. in immediately after the Challenger shuttle blew up. He was always interested in helping us connect what we were learning in the classroom with what was going on outside of school. May God grant his family peace and comfort through His Mighty Son and Spirit.
Eric Owens & Family
Coach Goddard was a great example of coach, man and supporter of the wrestling community. Thoughts and prayers for the family. From the Elliotts and Perry Meridian coaching staff!
Mrs. G, I am so sorry, and I know words cannot heal the pain. Prayers are with you at this time! I'm always telling stories about the times I went to Europe with you too! My favorite was when we were in Red Light District and we couldn't find Mr. G! We finally found him in that underground bar! We laughed so hard, and never let him forget about that! I could go on anon with all the stories! You guys were my second parents and always there for me! I could've never ask for a better teacher or mentor! The community has taken such a major loss! Sorry I couldn't be there, but Mr. G will never be forgotten! On my love always!!
Alan you were a very good friend to me.I will miss you. Barb I am sorry your loss.you both have been a Blessing to me.and I thank you for that! 8
Thank you coach for the lessons you taught me on and off the mat. You will always be remembered.
Craig Sparks Class of '91
I had the pleasure of working with Al at Fulton JHS for 20 years. The man always put the kids first - the hallmark of a great teacher! He will be missed.
Barb, I am so sorry for your loss . Al was a great man who gave me my starting chance in coaching . Love
Mr. Goddard was the MVP (or MIP--Most Important Person) at Fulton Jr. Hi. during the 22 years I was there, in my opinion. The time that he gave to so many kids was unique. Hearing the names of Hubner, Delois, Dowler, O'Neal, Randolph, West, and obviously Nabb among others who Coach Goddard inspired to coach wrestling I'm sure will always inspire Barb and Al's family.
Alan, I love you so much and I know I will never be half the man you were, but I will try so hard to live my life like you would want me to. You touched so many peoples heart in your life and helped so many people out. I am proud to say you are my godfather. Words will never describe how I feel and I love you and Barb so much. Thank you for being my Dad's best friend and a part of my life. I will do my best to help anyone that is in need just like you have. The world has truly lost one of the best people I know. I will never forget all the memories that we share together. Glad I was able to spend time with you in the hospital.
You will be missed.
CW, Kathy and Ginger Acher send their heartfelt condolences to the Goddard family at this sad time.
Coach, You and Barb were always there for my family and I. I started out as your student and wrestler. I became your understudy and friend. Thank you for all the good times. Rest in Peace!
Mr. Goddard thank you for the opportunity of knowing the kind of man that you were. There isn't a story of you that doesn't bring a smile to my face. You were an amazing mentor and leave a tough act to follow!
I could never even begin to express how much Coach changed me as a person. When times were tough and people didn't believe in me he did! I'll forever be grateful for the time he spent with me making me a better athlete, person, and father. He instilled in me the belief of hard work and determination. I truly believe Coach was the greatest man I've ever known. And someday I could only hope to fill those shoes for some other kid. Thanks for everything you've ever taught and showed me, I'll be sure to pass it on, Jason...
This last week it was not hard to realize how much you meant to me and this wrestling family that you headed. My only hope is that you know how much that is. I wish we could chat one last time. You were my compass through many hard times. I will do my best to stay on the path that you paved for so many of us. I love you and miss you so much.
I was blessed to have Mr. G all 3 years at Fulton. He was my teacher, my mentor and my friend! Mr. G was always concerned about Jeff's health and was always there for me. I will miss you Mr. G and I will always remember the life lessons you taught me.
In last week it was hard not to see how much you meant to me and the rest of this wrestling family you headed. My only hope is that you could feel how much that is. I wish I could have one last chat. You were a compass to me through life and I pray I can continue in the path that you paved for so many of us. I love you and will miss you so much until we meet again.
We could fill encyclopedias with testimonials from kids, parents, teachers and friends who you and Barb forever changed. Because you taught me so much I can't focus on just one nugget of wisdom. However, you told me a coach couldn't truly succeed unless he had a great wife. You and Barb were a huge success for decades. You and Barb are Hall-Of-Famers, not just as a coach (and coach's wife) but more importantly, as people. You always said "It is not a sprint, it is a marathon" and you ran one hell of a race my friend. I miss you buddy. Stay in your stance, keep your motion and stay solid.
Wow...just WOW! What an amazing turnout of people paying their respect as we say goodbye to an amazing man! I also wanted to say a very special thank you to Barb for allowing all of us to be a part this process; she could have kept this moment reserved for only family but she made the choice to share this will ALL of those who were privileged enough to know her husband. We are all truly better people for knowing you Coach Goddard and for that, I personally, am forever grateful!
As a 7th grader at Fulton, I was in awe of this Mr Goddard fellow- he had a way about him. Strict, yet totally nice and even funny. Post age 21, he was the first former teacher to buy my friends and I a round. #beerswithcoach as Brett would say. Mentor, friend, politico, all-around great guy gone before his time; will be sorely missed.
Our paths 1st crossed some 30 plus years ago, when Coach G was my Football-Basketball and Wrestling Coach.. The last few years of our Journey were some of the best I had. Coach G, you meant a lot to my Son and I, as well as thousands of others. He worked us hard and made us tough and showed us there were rainbows in those clouds. Forever, we will all hear the echoes of your teachings, as we go thru life.
You were a Giant of a man, Coach G, I will deeply miss you.
Coach G was so much more than just a coach for me and countless others. He was a father figure to me in a very crucial time in a young man's life. He helped me become the man and father I am today. He was there for me many times throughout the years. Barb, thank you for sharing him with all of us! I am so glad you were able to tell him that I loved him and I want you to know I love you as well and I will always be here for you.
I'm still at a loss for words you went way too soon my friend. I have caught myself breaking down over the past few days, but after reading what many of your wrestlers and students have said I feel your strength and can hear your voice coaching me through. I promise to bring little Nolan to visit your grave and tell him what an amazing man you were (if between the two of us we influence 1/2 the people you did I would be amazed). We as a family (Katie, Nolan and I) will also do our best to help Barb in any way we can. The world lost a great man, and heaven gained one amazing angel on the 15th.
Coach - it was an honor to be your friend. You changed lives, more lives then you will ever know. I will never forget the late nights and laughs that we shared. Thank you for loving my family as your own. We will miss you so much but will remember so many great times together too. We love you!!!
Barbara, Phil, and Stephen~ Thank you for sharing this special celebration of Alan's life with the Gilliland-Howe Family. Alan was a very special man and we have enjoyed all the memories he has left us with, over the years. I will never forget the (A-) he gave me for Alice's funeral. May you find comfort and peace.
Leslie Thackery and the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home.
Al was forever the Giant. He supported our little kids through our alumni. His heart and passion will be missed.
Alan Goddard was a wonderful world history teacher, coach and one who loved to travel the world. I have wonderful memories of the 1991 EF trip to Europe. RIP Mr. Goddard
Alan I am proud to have been able to share Brett Alan with you for many years. I know he was like a son you never had and I will cherish that memory. Rest in peace as you have definitely earned it. We love you.
I had the honor of coaching with Alan his first year as head wrestling coach at Ben Davis. Alan had a big heart and welcomed me with open arms. We had a lot of great experiences that year, some that I will never forget. I lost my father almost two years ago so I know how hard it is to lose such a great role model. I am deeply saddened and my thoughts and prayers are with Alan's family!
Alan, you will be missed by many my friend. Our gang had some good times way back when. That's how I remember you. God bless.
I had the honor to have Mr. Goddard as my wrestling coach for my 8th and 9th grade year at Fulton. He has touched many lives. May he rest in the loving arms of God Alan...
My first encounter with Mr. Goddard was at Fulton Jr high. He was my first wrestling coach that I ever had. He happen to be one of my greatest inspirations that I would carry thoughout my life. He taught me the values to stay encourage and to strive for excellence. My thoughts and prayers are extended to his family and loved ones, he will trully be missed.
Alan was a great guy. Peace be with you.
So he passed over, and all the trumpets sounded for him on the other side.
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Goddard's class during my freshman year at Fulton Jr. High. His quick wit and passion for teaching will remain with me for years to come. He was such a great influence on me.
The Childress family would like to extend heir sympathies to the family of Alan Goddard, childhood neighborand and friend.
I had the good fortune to meet Alan through wrestling. A caring, decent man who loved his family, his friends and the sport of wrestling. Thanks for being a good friend, Alan. May you Rest in Peace
I am saddened to hear of the passing of Alan. My first encounter with Mr. Goddard was at Fulton Junior High School where he presented a trip to Europe to the students. I went on that trip in 1996 and loved every minute of it - even when I ran through a window and had to get stitches in Switzerland! I fondly remember how Mr. Goddard helped me get to the local doctor and how he made the trip one that I still remember to this day. I recall a few other memories, but this one sticks out to me. For Mr. Goddard was one of the most caring teachers I've ever had, and I will never forget that. It is evident by the vast amount of responses to his passing that Mr. Goddard touched so many lives, not just my own. My thoughts and condolences go out to his family during this tough time. May God grant you the strength and that you feel His love and comfort.
Rest in peace Al. We honored you on Sunday to let you know you were a respected friend. We will honor you again on our annual boat trip in June. You will be missed.
Phil--so sorry to read about Alan. It sounds as if he had a wonderful life. I hope your wonderful memories are helpful at this most difficult time.
Having known Alan and family for over 55 years (Greensburg native) fraternity brother at IU and taught and coached with him at Fulton Jr. High. I was shocked/sad to hear of his passing. Condolences to Barbra, Steve/Phil G, and extended family. The facebook posts tell all - he will be truly missed by all who knew him.
I am so grateful for the wonderful influence you had on my two sons, Eric and J B(jesse) Hendricks. I want Barbara to have great peace.
Alan, you and Barbara guided us and our girls through two trips to Europe that we will never forget. Thanks you and rest in peace.
In honor of Alan Goddard. May God bless you.
You will be greatly missed, Alan. You were like an uncle to me. I have known you my entire life. You are at peace now. No more pain and sickness. God bless you. Prayers to you, Barbara.
Rest in peace, Alan. We will remember with fondness your good spirit and bright outlook.
Deepest sympathies to Barbara and all of Alan's friends and family. He was a great guy and always kind. He will be greatly missed by many.
R I P Alan, you will always be remembered as a great friend!
I had Alan as a freshman at Fulton Junior High School. He didn't just teach. He loved it. Every day. I remember how he'd close each class, "Stay out of jail. Curfew is 11:01." Hard to believe he's gone. Glad I later got to be a colleague as well. You'll be missed Mr. Goddard.
In 1976, through the "Cadet Teachers Program" I was assigned the 8th grade American History class taught by Al Goddard.
An experience and man that I've never forgotten!
You will be missed Alan. Very proud to be a classmate of yours. You have so many loved ones my friend. My prayers to the family.
Steve & Phil: You are in my thoughts. I am sorry for your loss.
Best, Ted Qualknbush
I graduated with Alan. He was always a friendly crazy guy. R.I.P. , Alan.
Alan was one of my favorite customers and a cherished friends. We loved talking wrestling and always had some great laughs. I am a better person because of Alan. He enjoyed life and was true class act. I am sorry for your loss.
A life well lived and a man who will be missed
