To Alina's family,

I just learned Alina was one of the victims of the Sugarland concert tragedy and cannot imagine the shock and sorrow you have experienced. Words cannot express the depth of my sympathy for the loss of your angel.

As a child, Alina had a special way of touching lives and one could easily recognize that nothing was going to hold her back in making her mark in this world! It makes my heart smile reading about her accomplishments, friends' tributes and seeing photos of her as a beautiful young woman. There is a saying pointing out how one should live their life …. It isn't about how much you love - but how much others love you. May you find comfort in knowing Alina was loved by many.

Keep the faith and may the enormous void in your lives be filled with cherished memories.

Love and prayers -

Alina, Your are not only my cousin but you are my best friend. My most favorite get togethers with the family all most all of them are because of your goofy ways. It still seems that you are here, just like your still in school or on vacation. I can't believe that your really gone and one day I know the family can think of you and smile and laugh in your honor and know that you are doing the same. I love you and miss you... see you later.

Alina had a contagious smile and a great sense of humor. I always knew when she was in the congregration. She made it a point to greet with a smile and the words "How are you today?" Prayers be with the family. Remember the memories that you shared with her and she'll not be forgotten. May God be with you and grant you all peace of mind. Can you imagine the beauty she added to her new home?

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Alina was an amazing young woman that I unfortunately was unable to know as well as I would have liked. Her spirit and love for life has spread like wild fire through the students here at MC and I am amazed more everyday by the stories I hear and the impact she made. Manchester College is truly a better place because of this young woman. You will be missed Alina. Thoughts and prayers to her family, friends and admirers...

God bless you and your family.

Alina,

I don’t know exactly how to put into words everything I have been thinking and feeling over the last 5 days so I hope this expresses it enough. You were such a beautiful and amazing young woman! We all love you and know you are watching over us now. There is some sadness in my heart for all the children that you were meant to teach because they would have had such an incredible person guiding and inspiring them, but you still touched so many lives! All of us at Manchester (and anyone anywhere) who ever knew you or just spent any time with you have been changed forever for the better! Your smile and personality was infectious and it was impossible to not take notice and start smiling too. Now, all of us going out into the world have been and will be taking your spirit, your poise, your optimism and your grace and hopefully changing the lives of those around us: paying forward the love and friendship we received from you. Alina, words can’t express what you meant to the Manchester family, as well as many more, and as you are looking down on all of us you can truly rest in peace knowing that because of the person you were and the way you have touched our lives, you will live on forever with each of us.

Alina’s family,

I wish I could be there in person tomorrow, but I will be there in spirit and my prayers, thoughts, and condolences are with you all. Your daughter/sister was truly a blessing to be around and it was an honor to call her my friend. She was truly a classy woman.
Thursday, August 18, 2011
Alina was a wonderful young woman who I am happy to have had the chance to get to know. Although I only knew her the past year, she was a pleasure to be around and could always make your day just a little bit brighter with her smile. I am grateful for the opportunity to have spent time getting to know her through our education courses, car rides to and from Fort Wayne during J-term, and our student teaching experience at MIS.

My thoughts are with Alina and her family at this time.

I got to meet Alina when I had the privilege of supervising her student teaching. She was constantly asking for different ideas and ways of making her classroom and students successful. Her energy and drive made her one of the best I have ever worked with in teaching. I thank God she came into my life. My prayers and warm wishes are with her entire family.
Thursday, August 18, 2011
My thoughts and prayers have been with you and your family over the last few days. You gave a lot to the people around you during your time here and it is very obvious that your impact will last longer than your days here did. I always appreciated your smile and positive attitude. Thanks for being a part of my life and the Manchester College community. You will be greatly missed.

What a beautiful, talented, amazing young woman. I will never forget having Alina in two classes last year. Her peers respected her, and we all appreciated her positive energy. When she walked into the classroom, the room brightened with her smile and enthusiasm. She would have been an amazing English teacher, and having her nephew pin her at the ceremony last spring was important to her, demonstrating her passion for children. My thoughts and prayers are with Alina's family and friends. Peace, Heather Schilling (education professor at MC)

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Knowing Alina was a lesson and a blessing to me. On the surface, we definitely came across as extremely different people. It is probably fair to say that if we had gone to a larger school or had had different majors that we wouldn't have gotten to know each other well (or at all), just by virtue of the cliques and strata that are so prevalent on campuses today. I am deeply grateful that such specious differences did not prevent me from knowing her.

She was the calm in contrast to my eccentricity, the gentleness in contrast to my abrasiveness. While I projected my radicalism in classes, oftentimes challenging and even offending my classmates, she was without exception kind and respectful. I treasured her insight: whenever we were assigned to be each others' peer editors, I was thrilled, because I knew I would get feedback that would not only make my writing better, but that would inform and deepen my thoughts on whatever the topic happened to me. Her thoughtfulness and attention were exceptional: they were a gift to everyone in her life.

Although she was not overly political, she was without a doubt an ally in the truest sense of the word. She got to know people as individuals rather than labels, and befriended people because of their values and actions rather than their identities. When she wrote about the events of United Sexualities (Manchester College's LGBT student organization) for the campus paper, she covered them with thoroughness, sensitivity and the same open heart that she gave to everything in her life. Her friends and interests were diverse, and her actions and goals were motivated by a desire to connect with others, learn as much as possible, and creatively explore this world.

I am so glad that I got to know her, and wish I could have had more time to spend with her. She is missed, by me and so many others.

I didn't know her personally but as a fellow American and human please accept my sincere condolences. I cant help but feel hopeless sitting at home just listening to the fact that such a beautiful girls life was taken away in a matter of seconds. Its unexplainable and the pain of a loved one will never heal but I can only hope that it will one day become bearable to those who have lost her. We might not ever fully comprehend why these events had to occur to Alina but we can hope & learn to accept it. I have never had contact with this wonderful girl and its shame that I feel I should have met such a fantastic person.

"If tears could build a stairway,
And memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to Heaven
And bring you home again."

Sincerely Kyle P.

At the meetings we share our experiences resulting from our child's death, & how we deal with those experiences. The chance to talk, share, & listen is so important in the grieving process. If you ever are interested in attending, there is no time frame in which to start coming. Come when you think you are ready to meet others who understand how you feel. There is a chapter in Fort Wayne that meets on the First Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm, with the exception of July when there is a Balloon Release & December a Candle Light Service. Alina was a wonderful girl with the biggest heart. No matter what she had a smile on her face and was willing to lend a hand. The world lost what would of been a wonderful teacher who would have brighten the future for many students. In the short time she was on this earth she touched hundreds of lives. I love you....I will never forget our New Jersey trip! Love your cousin....
Tuesday, August 16, 2011
My prayers go out to Alina's family and friends. Only the good lord knows why it was her time to meet him in heaven. She will now lead even a better life than what it appears she led on earth. As for her family and friends, use this time both to mourn, but to also be happy while celebrating her life. And keep her in your memory. I too was a Manchester graduate and lost my brother to cancer at about the same age. It has been almost 30 years and I still think of him every day...what he meant to me in the good times and in bad. My God bless in your time of need. Jim, Class of 1982.
Tuesday, August 16, 2011
I had the great pleasure of meeting Alina and becoming good friends with her throughout our years at Manchester. Alina was someone you could always count on for a smile and a good time. I will never forget our times together from "burritos in a blanket" star gazing to playing Euchre in Oakwood. I also was fortunate enough to spend time with her Friday night in Muncie. I will forever remember her smile and laughter and will keep living for her. I love you, Alina, and thank you for putting a stamp on my heart. Rest in peace.

Dearest Bigjohnny family,

I was so saddened to hear the tragic news early sunday morning that we had lost Alina. She was very excited to start her teaching career with all of us at Wilson Middle School. She was a little sparkplug full of enthusiasm. I know she would have been an outstanding teacher for us. Although our students and most of our faculty never got the chance to meet her, she will be missed. However, she will always be a part of Wilson Middle School. Our condolences to family and all who knew her. We will miss you Alina, but never forget you!!!

Like many others, I met Alina at Manchester. She lived down the hall from me my sophomore year. I'll always remember her smile and positive attitude. I'll also never forget hearing her laugh from my room. She was always so polite and friendly, as well.

Muncie Community Schools was fortunate to have hired Alina for her first teaching position. We deeply regret that her positive spirit and love for teaching has been shortened. It would have been an honor to have her teach our middle school students.

I was Alina's fourth grade teacher at Pleasant Center. Alina was a very special girl who contributed so much to our class. I was so excited when she studied to become a teacher at my alma mater - Manchester College. A bright beacon of light has been diminished and I'm sad for all those students who will never know Alina.

When Alina student taught for my classes last spring, I knew the education system would be gaining a phenomenal teacher. Her passion for students and learning was evident with each lesson. As her time in my room continued, she became more than a student teacher to me. She became a friend and colleague whom I respected. She touched the lives of my students in the short time she was with them, and I can't help but think of the number of lives she would have impacted had her own life not been cut short. Words cannot express how deeply sorry I am for the pain her family is feeling. I will be praying for you as you pick up your lives and move beyond this tragedy. God Bless!

May God be with your family in this sad time of life. It's sad to see you go so young and with all the life you could have had but was taken from you in the blink of an eye. Southwood Jr./ Sr. High School will always remember you even though some people didn't know you. Southwood's announcements had a moment of silence in memory of you. You were a very good teacher. Thanks for teaching the kids you taught in so little time. May your soul rest in peace and your family and friends get through this harsh time. R.I.P. Alina R. Bigjohny or Miss Bigjohny. You'll always be remembered.
