Uncle of Christian Patrick Quinn
Wednesday, 12 June, Chris Quinn age 37 died. Chris was my nephew. 30 years ago Chris was ring bearer at my wedding. A skinny blonde kid in a tiny white tux. Grandma kept him awake as he was full of benedryl for the poison ivy covering most of his little body.
Richard Quinn was his dad. Richard was a gentle giant of a man who would give his last to others. Richard did not start trouble, he could finish it. Richard was my best new friend at the wedding. We hit it off and he remained my wing man.
Six months after the wedding Richard passed away to the same heart condition that took Chris. We were devastated, we mourned, we thought the mold was broken with Richard. A mighty Quinn had fallen. A hero was lost to the world. We should have noticed the little boy of eight, too cute to be a boy, with feet way too big for his little body.
Chris started to grow and did not stop till he was six foot three and 250+ pounds of gentle strength. Chris never started trouble; he could and would finish it. Someone wanting to rob houses in Clarksville PA found themselves answering to Chris. Most of PA have only thinly spread State Police. Chris pounced and bounced the robber and the State Police were happy to collect what was left. Chris Quinn, fireman, coal miner, and hero did what was right. He protected his community.
Chris and his brother Jimmy lost their father Richard and became sons of the township. It was not an easy time to grow up in SWPA. Many guys such as Mark, Mo, teachers, and coaches took their turn. We all loved those boys. As Chris grew we realized another might Quinn was with us. Chris had little if any memory of his father, but Richard was in the mirror.
I got to know Chris when he came to live with us after high school. I dearly love my two daughters, for a short time I got to share a bit of having a son and my daughters to have a big brother and protector. Joy, pride, and anger all in the same hour. Isn't that love?
We all just wanted Chris to just have a good life and do good things for himself. It finally came together, career, house, community, and volunteer fireman. Then at age 37 he is gone. I suppose 30 fathers days without his dad Richard was one too many. I like to think they are now together. If you are in Jefferson PA you might catch on the hill at sunset two really big men looking down on us all. Just squint a bit and use the corner of your eye, they are there together.
