It has been a little over one year since you have passed Dave. However there isn't a day that your name isn't spoken in remeberence. You have touched many lives and your humor is still making people smile! We respect you for your accomplishments, love of the land as a farmer and deadication to family, community and Catholic War Veterans Post 1954.

It was your inspiration and action that established the Veterans Memorial at St Peter of the Fields Cemetery. God bless you and your family.

I met Dave in 1989 when I started working at Maplewood CC. He was one of my first friends, especially when he discovered my connection with a certain pig farm. When Dave was a special needs ag teacher, he would take his students on field trips to my family's pig farm in Palmyra. My step-dad and mom, Fred and Bernie Dearth, enjoyed those visits and grew fond of Dave and his students. Dave gave me a book, "Any fool can be a pig farmer." I still have it! Many years ago, I went to NYC with Dave, Connie, Howard Harper, Ron Bolyard and Mary Beth Talerico. We had so much fun together! The last time I saw Dave was at (our beloved friend and co-worker) Linda Cain's calling hours on Nov. 11, 2012. (Linda worked at Maplewood CC for 34 years.) I was in line, Dave was leaving the calling hours but had come over to say "Hi" and gave me a hug. He greeted many friends that day. Thank goodness! We didn't realize it would be the last time we would see him. Dave loved God, his family, friends, and life. He has set the standard for the rest of us...to love life, to serve others ...and just have fun! With fond memories, Claudia

Connie and Family,

I remember the first time I met Dave, when he was advisor of our Young Farmer group. I was a new farm wife, and Dave had dark hair. I also remember the most recent time I spoke with Dave, and it was a conversation about former students. I don't think he ever gave up on a kiddo. Don and I have enjoyed our friendship with your family. We ask God's blessing on you as you mourn, until only the happy memories remain.

The rain is falling today and seems to balance the sorrow of losing a good friend. Yet perhaps there can be comfort found in melancholy which seems natural when remembering a life well lived, well-loved. Those memories will live on in the lives of all the people Dave loved; his family, his friends, his colleagues and co-workers. The memory of his life will continue to touch all of the people who are involved in the many community organizations he dedicated his life to. Dave was truly one of the few people who, no matter what, could always be counted on to do whatever was in his power to help a friend. He genuinely cared for his fellowman.
My condolences go out to his family, especially his granddaughter Jenna, because Dave loved her fiercely. He loved all his family but Jenna was his pride and joy. He delighted in spending time with her. It has only been a couple weeks since I saw him last never realizing that simple, casual goodbye would be the last. I am surprised by the how profound and raw the emptiness. I realize tomorrow it will be putting more than a friend into the ground. It will be putting a part of me, a part I'd already thought long buried.
December 02, 2012
As a teacher I knew of Dave's work at Maplewood. I spoke to him when we took 8th graders from Streetsboro to see the school and enjoyed his sense of humor. Once I was stuck in a snowdrift walking to the parking lot at KSU's Newman Center. Dave didn't really know me, but he came to my rescue so I wouldn't fall and get hurt. What a gentleman!
December 02, 2012
Dave inspired everyone with his smiles, humor, energy and positive attitude. Everyone who met him grew in inner strength and spirit, did more good and overcame more challenges. Memories of Dave will always lead everyone who knew him forward.
Our sympathies, Gary and Jacquelyn Harmon

Dave, was a dedicated and compassionate individual with enormous capacity to serve his family, friends, country, community, church and fellow veterans. He was the life of the party even though there may not have been a party! He was loved and will be missed by his family and many many others. God bless him and may he be with our lord and savior. They say that Marines guard the "Gates of Heaven". Dave undoubtably will be Captain of the Guard greeting all with a friendly smile and some of his witty humor. Dave & I began our teaching adventure together at Maplewood in the Career Development Program. Dave was 25 yrs. old & I was 40 years old. I worked at Maplewood 26 yrs. Dave & I had many adventures together. I learned to love that man & knowing he was out in the community "doing his thing" always gave me a warm feeling. Now that he has left us, I will always have that hollow feeling we get when we lose someone very special. I grieve along with his family. With love, Sylvia Powers.

Dear Connie, There are no words that I can offer that will lesson the pain of loosing your solemate and bestfriend, your loving husband, Dave. We are so very sorry. God called him home early for some very special reason and for that we will never know. Keep him in your hearts and he will always be with you. I hope that you can take some comfort in hearing how many lives he touched in his short life. From the minute I met Dave, I was impressed with the generosity he extended to everyone he met, his warmhearted smile that immediately put you at ease, to his awesome sense of humor that literally would bring you to tears at times. He truly was a wonderful and loving man and we will miss him. Tim and I send our prayers to your entire family. May God cradle you all in his arms and bring you comfort through this difficult time. With heavy hearts and our deepest sympathy.

Dave will truly be missed by many. He was one of the most compassionate and caring persons I have ever had the honor of knowing. May times I was given the opportunity to help him dress so he could play Santa to the little kids at Maplewood and those times were some of happiest. Dave touched not only my life but many students, parents and colleagues and he will always be remembered for his laugh, jokes and big bear hugs. My prayers of comfort go out to Connie and the family and that their loving memories will be forever held in their hearts. We loved you Dave.
November 29, 2012
Dear Connie and Family, When I began working with Dave at Maplewood, I had no idea what I was in for only to find out that it was the best years of my entire teaching experience. Dave was the kind of person the special needs students needed in their lives---someone who cared about them, taught them practical and realistic skills and yes, kicked them in the pants when they needed it. I know the memories will bring smiles to all your faces one day. Love, Cathy Russell (Columbus)

My prayers to the family. He will be surely missed. I remember as a kid we always had Santa come to our house to bring us a little gift before the big day. It wasn't until my senior year in high school at Maplewood that I found out Dave was the santa. He was a great neighbor and no matter where we saw him he was always there greeting you with a hand shake or a wave.
