Please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of your beloved. There are never any right words to express how deeply sad I am for the pain your family is enduring at this difficult time.

As Chair of the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs and Military Installations, I am sincerely thankful for his valiant service in defense of our rights and freedom.

His commitment to family, friends, our community, and to serving our great nation leaves a wonderful legacy. May the love and the wonderful memories you shared with him help you when you need it most. He will never be forgotten, and your family will be remembered in my prayers.

I also wanted to share one of my favorite stories about grampa since I wasn't able to get it written in time for the service. When I started working in the country music business in Nashville , Grampa was incredibly proud. I knew he loved music, so I wanted to give him a chance to learn about it from the inside. I asked him and Grammy to come down to Music Row & have lunch with me and one of the Christian music songwriters that I knew. I expected Grampa to come down wearing his usual blue jumpsuit & cowboy boots - I had even told my co-workers that he always wore that 'uniform' & they were all looking forward to seeing this unusual combination of clothing.
So, I was surprised when he arrived wearing his Sunday best, hair combed, shoes shined. He was literally beaming with pride during the tour of our offices, talking with the staff, and looking at the gold & platinum records on the walls of the office. The songwriter that accompanied us to lunch, Don Poythress, was an incredibly good sport as he answered all of Grampa's questions about the business and listened with great interest to his stories. It was a very sweet moment. On that same trip, I also took Grammy and Grampa to the Country Music Hall of Fame where we read every.single.sign/plaque/exhibit from one end of the building to the other, only stopping to listen to Grampa's stories in between. I always felt that my work in the music business became something kindred between us and I loved being able to share that with him & feel his pride for me through it. For my 31st birthday, Grampa had one of his own portable record players restored for me. I remember being told that he had to drive all the way across town to replace the needle on the player. I felt so special knowing that he did that just for me. I am very proud of it & the records that he gave me from his personal collection to go along with it.

As a young couple starting out, Fred was such a blessing to us. Johnny and I recall once when we had a car with almost no brakes. We cldnt even afford a brake job and Fred came to the rescue. I remember him working on that car in his driveway in harmony hills w/ a lantern/flashlight til about midnight and at the end saying " Johnny, this brake job should last you the life of this car!" Seeing as how the car was at least 15-20 yrs old, it did! Also he was so generous to us, trusting us to take his RV! The words that come to mind when I think of Fred are generous, kind, gentle, soft spoken, loving. So glad to have known him. What an example! Much love, Johnny and Lestra

The Best Grandfather ANYONE could ask for. He will never be forgotten and will always be our Christmas angel. His love for the Lord was unmatchable and he always set a good example for everyone. His faith made each of us better, and his love made our family stong. Never forgotten, and always our guardian angel!

Our sympathies to Fred's family for the loss of his presence in this world. We were blessed to have known him for so long. His quiet kindness over the years is something never to be forgotten. We rejoice that he is now healthy, happy and at rest with the Lord he served so well all his years. He was, and is, well-loved.
