To all my family who put together the picture slide show,THANK YOU! I so loved looking at all the pictures. So much I've missed out on. Please just know I love you all and do think of you and grandma often.
I wish I had known you better grandma. I love you, enjoy your new body in heaven.
I was lucky enough to be in one of Mrs. Van Gundy's classes my junior year and then to be an aide for her my senior year (1978). Her no nonsense approach to learning brought out the best in her students. We kept in touch for many years after graduation. She encouraged me to become a teacher myself, which I have happily been doing for nearly 30 years now. I will forever remember her with love and affection. Rest in peace, Mrs. Van Gundy.
. Irene was taken the evening after the Sandy Hook Elementary school children. Her granddaughter Anne said this: "The day Irene went home, Heaven truly needed another teacher." I thought this was so true. Such a wonderful teacher and friend. Truly we were priviledged to know her and be in her life many years. Our boys stated what a wonderful woman, friend and teacher she was also and wanted her family to know she meant alot to them. Thanks to her for all the help she gave whenever it was needed. You are an angel now and free to fly wherever you want. We'll always miss your humor, friendship and love. Blessing to all the families. Maxine, Gary, Greg and Mickey Bracken
Thinking of you all, Kathy, this morning while I'm in Seattle area. Your mom is being honored well. Peace and blessings to ALL of you in her family. Ila Leavy - Greeley West High
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
I was a student of Mrs Van Gundy at Greeley west in 1979 she was a great lady. Mary (hamman) Foos fort collins colorado
My Aunt Irene was a remarkable person in going back to school, after being a housewife and going through a divorce, to earn her degree and become such an outstanding teacher. Being a banker in Denver, I was always amazed at the number of students that recognized our last name and always asked if I was related. Those former students always said she was one of the best teachers that they ever had. She will be missed.
I remember Irene's young days back in Sterling. She and my mother Mary Yenter Kloberdanz and Betty Howe We're always busy reading and running around together. I'm sure Irene's influence was what kept my mother reading throughout her life up until the time Alzheimer's Took it away from her. I'm thank Irene fondly for her influence and friendship to them both.RIP
I worked with Irene for years at Greeley West, and I always envision her bustling from place to place to get things done to get to the baseball game. She loved her baseball team. Irene was a no nonsense teacher who cared for each student who walked through her door, and she expected them to be at their very best. They responded by being at their very best. She was a dedicated friend who would always go the extra mile for you and be there to raise your spirits when those tough days hit. Irene will definitely be pulled into service immediately in the big classroom on the other side.
I had the pleasure of being a student of Mrs. Van Gundy's at Greeley West and all though very strict and tough, she left a very positive impact on all of her students! I must say, she knew her Shakespear! One of the most memorable teachers at Greeley West by far. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with so many.
Thanks for all the support, not to mention all the Sunflower seeds. Go Spartans. Our Baseball mom.
Mrs. Van Gundy looked into my heart and saw potential that I didn't know I had. She challenged me to reach that potential. She gave me a great gift and I hope I can honor her by sharing it with others.
I HAD THE HONOR OF BEING A STUDENT OF MISS VANGUNDY IN 1972 SHE WAS THE SWEETEST TEACHER A PERSON COULD HAVE. THE PLEASURE OF HAVING HER AS THE BIGGEST BASEBALL FAN WAS ONE OF THE MOST WODERFUL THINGS IN MY HIGH SCHOOL CAREER DOUG MAY (GREELEY CO-CLASS OF 72
She was my teaching colleague at Greeley West High for 11 years. She helped me during some tough times during my first years there. Yes, she set some high standards, loved Shakespeare teaching and poetry. When I saw her a week before she died, she knew me enough to touch my cheek and express her love. That meant a lot to me. She has earned her rest. I shall treasure the piece of art she did which I bought through the Alzheimer's Art Auction some years ago. It hangs in my dining room. I love the picture of her with the beer glass! My condolences to all you family members. Ila Leavy (Greeley, CO)
She was always one of our biggest cheerleaders either for sports or drama. She was definitely one of my favorite teachers, strict but fair! She will be missed!
I had the pleasure of being a student of Mrs. Van Gundy. She had a way to teach with enthusiasm and gentle fortitude. She was always encouraging and visable. Was incredibly supportive of all the students and wanted us all to succeed in life. Her didcation and passion was certainly life touching.
I have to join the chorus here. Mrs. Van Gundy was my teacher in 1978. She reminded me of my teacher grandmother. Tough but fair and an excellent teacher. And she attended all of our baseball games.
I can honestly say and it may sound trite, she is one of those teachers I attribute my success to as a lawyer. She taught me how to write and speak clearly. She loved her students and helped those who were underpriviledged. I have such fond memories of her.
I was in Mrs. Van Gundy's english class and participated in speech and debate. She was always kind and concerned with her students. She was a wonderful person who left this world a little better for her being here. Rest In Peace and thank you.
Probably one of the more memorable teachers during my school years! Very tough, no B.S in her classroom type of teacher. Had her for 2 classes in 1979 and 1980. One of the best, her dedication to the students, and to Greeley West high will be remembered for many years to come. Thank you for touching the lives of all the students who crossed your path...
Greeley West Class of 1981
Mrs. Van Gundy was my teacher in 1982 and 1983. She was definately a teacher that I will never forget. She had to have the all time record for high school sporting event attendance. Thank you for all you gave me.
