Jerry - very sorry to hear of your passing - you were one of those fun-loving, free-spirited people who made it a pleasure to teach at Spellman back in the 80's - lots of great laughs !!
I had Mr. Barker at Cardinal Spellman High School back in the 80's and I remember him challenging us all to think. He definitely had a big impact on getting me to be more open-minded and tolerant. Thank you for that.
You delivered History and Ethics with humor and intelligence and taught so many of us how to think for ourselves and what issues were of true importance. With your example and the example of other great teachers I had, it was an easy decision to become a teacher myself. You are missed.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I consider myself lucky to have been one of his students during my time at CSHS. You always looked forward to his class because you knew he'd always have something funny to say and you'd always learn something new and interesting. He will most certainly be missed.
I was a CSHS student in 1983 and had the privilege of having Mr. Barker for a teacher. I loved his classes and he will always be in the forefront of my fond memories of school. He was an excellent teacher and his lovely smile will never be forgotten.
Dear Barker Family,
I am deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Mr. Barker. He was funny and mischievous and genuinely cared about all of us. He got us interested in politics - with a big ol' "Kennedy for President" plastered on his briefcase. He played practical jokes on other teachers and made us laugh until we cried. All with an innocence that only he could get away with.
He also had a huge heart. He was there for me (and many others) with gentle guidance - pushing us to be the best people we could be. I just heard of Jerry's death today. I wish I could have told you all in person what an impact he has had on my life.
He was an amazing man.
Mr. Barker, your humor has stayed with me through my life. You were funny and smart. Thanks for sharing some of you with us at CSHS.
MR. Barker you were the most lively teacher at CSHS. I loved homeroom we started the day off on a humerous note. I am saddened to hear of your passing. Rest peacefully!!! class 1992
If there was one teacher you wanted for a class in your senior year, it was Mr. Barker's US History class. Funny guy and well-versed in most subjects. He will be missed.
So sorry for your loss. Mr. Barker was always one of my favorite teachers at Spellman. He had this amazing ability to bring out the best in all of his students.

PB, Mary-Alice & Carl,
I am so sorry about Jerry. I will miss his smiling face and cheery ways. I would see him at the deli buying "his kids" turkey as I was buying roast beef for my dog! A stranger once told me "we keep our loved ones alive in our hearts through fond memories -- that is our comfort and their eternity".
Jerry, thank you for touching my life, making it a pleasure to go to work, giving our QA unit a professional reputation ... and sorry about that Tom Brady comment last week (you know I was kidding right?).
Barker.......Just a note to let you know how much Janet and I appreciated all you did for our two lovley children; Jamie and Liza. The many stories of your escapades will live on with the Swindler family for many years to come.

I worked with Jerry at the comptroller's office and when I heard of his passing I was in shocked. He was a kind and caring person who always had a joke and would make you laugh. I enjoyed going into work and seeing his smiling face, talking about our cats and solving all the world problems. A good man he was and he will be missed.
