Dear Dereza Family and Friends,
I remeber fondly the times at The West Orange Armory, Ft Dix and Ft Drum where I had the opportunity to serve with John. Great Men and Soldiers come into our lives and touch them in great ways. John was such a Man. Diligent, Dedicated, Caring and Professional are words that I used to describe him.

I had the great privilege of serving with John in Bravo Company, 2-1202 Armor.
He was an outstanding soldier, gentleman and friend. My career success depended upon soldiers like John. I will always be thankful for his service and his loyalty. Whenever the men of B Co get together, he will always be part of the conversation.

Courage above all things, is the first quality of a True Warrior. Just seeing you take this Battle in stride has taught me so many life lessons. You would want us to remember the following saying.
"Life's not the breaths you take but the moments that take your breath away" So enjoy everyone of them to the fullest!!

The Sergeant doesn't sleep with a night light or flashlight. The Sergeant isn't afraid of the dark. The dark is afraid of the Sergeant.
When the Sergeant was in middle school, his English teacher assigned an essay: "WHAT IS COURAGE?" The Sergeant received an A+ for turning in a blank page with only his name at the top.
SFC (ret) John Dereza gave light to all our conversations and show courage until the end. I am proud to have served with such a great citizen soldier and honor to call him my friend. Rest In Peace My Friend.
So very sorry to hear about John. Please keep in touch to rekindle our friendship.

John was a great man and a great friend. He will be sorely missed. I remember him telling stories of his time on active duty with the Army and later with the National Guard. Of time spent trudging through the rain and shivering through the night in a cold sleeping bag, but he kept on going feeling he owed a duty to his new country. He spoke of his students, some favorably and some who were thorns in his side. He enjoyed teaching and was good at it. He taught me a lot even though I was never in his classroom. I loved him like a second father. He will never be forgotten.
I am so very sorry about John's passing. I will always remember that "Mennonite van" coming to pick me up to go for ice cream on a hot summer night. My prayers of peace and comfort from our Lord is with Jill and the kids.
