What a wonderful person! I will miss him greatly. John hooked me up with interesting information about his Porsche when he got it, he had also given me some information and a DVD about Eugene O'Neill, a famous playwright whose Northern California home John encouraged me to visit.
I teach Drama at Yucaipa High School, and John was always interested in discussing info for that subject. He taught history and always provided intriguing information about many topics.
John I will miss you!!
Love, Linda deBaun

John was always so welcoming and encouraging. He was an example to all of how to treat others.

It was such a shock to see John happy and joking one week and gone the next. John's stories and laugh were contagious and touched the lives of everyone he met. John will be deeply missed. Vicky, I know your loss is deep....may you find peace in your wonderful memories of John.

We will miss you, John. But your legacy lives on through the many lives you have touched throughout your many years as an educator. Thank you for all you have done for Yucaipa High School and our community. Go Bruins!

John was a wonderful colleague and union spokesperson. We will definitely miss his smile and upbeat personality at YHS. What a wonderful lifetime of service to our students as well as our teachers representing us as a profession both in California and Nationally. Thank you John for the union foundation that you laid that we continue to build on.

I cannot imagine the loss Vicky, Richard and the rest of his family are experiencing. John was truly a wonderful guy whom everyone who knew him will greatly miss. I will so miss hearing John, Tony and Jeff plan their tailgate parties! Marianne McVey

My heart simply breaks knowing I will not see John's happy, smiling face at YHS any longer. What a wonderful career he had, giving to our youth over the years in so many wonderful ways! I am honored to have served in the field of education with him! You are truly loved and missed John.

Great guy. We go back to high school days of adolescent fun. Saw him at the Monterey Porsche meeting in September. We had a wonderful day of reminiscing and planning for our 50th reunion - I will miss him.

He will be truly missed. I used to love hearing the Stories Tony would tell about John. Bobby and Tony used to love to UCLA football game with John and his Son for about 10 years. They always had funny Stories, From his Porsche rides, to his running Marathons. He loved to cook something new he found on Cooking shows for tailgating, Tony said it was always good. The Time his wife and him went and watched Ellen, seeing him on TV jumping all around with mostly women in the audience was so funny. He loved his Tommy Bahama Shirts, He was the Happiest we ever saw him at his Sons Wedding this last summer. He was so Happy that his Son married Veronica. We all had such a good time together, that we talked about going back . It is just so unbelievable, When he was in the Hospital the second time and we went to see him and he looked good, He had a three week Plan of getting better then we were going out to the Melting Pot. My Prayers go out to his Family, His Wife Vicki and Son and his wife.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Though I only met Mr. Hawkins a few months ago, both my daughter, Taylor and son, Connor McDonald cared very much for him. They enjoyed him as a teacher and friend. They met him through Mr. Reynard at YHS and he always had time to talk and encourage them. Only a great teacher would take the time to acknowledge the students whether on campus or off. A true, caring person. May your family be given strength, peace and comfort during this terrible time.

Dear Vickie,Lek and I were so shocked and sad to hear that John died after we had seen him at the Hickory Restaurant. He looked so good that night, and we thought he was on his way to recovery. Please accept our deepest and sincere sympathies for your loss. We will miss seeing his smiling face when we pass through the bar on our way to dinner. We both know John's Porsche is in Heaven with him. Love Lek & Eleanor VonKaesborg

I was saddened to hear about Mr. Hawkins passing. Looking through the pictures really brought back the memories. Grand Terrace was such an awesome place to grow up, and Mr. Hawkins was one of our great teachers. He will be missed. (BTW, I remember, and loved, his groovy sideburns.) Special thanks Dan Engle for keeping me in the loop.

Mr. Hawkins was a wonderful teacher. One of the only to take the time to try to straighten me out when I was headed down the wrong path. He really cared about his students.
My deepest sympathy to his wife and family.

Mr. Hawkins chose me to be defense attorney in a mock trial back in 8th grade history and to this day I regret never going to law school. He was a kind man. He worked for my dad one summer at his gas station.

I have known John for many years as a teacher in Yucaipa. We both served on our teacher's union together and he taught me many things about politics. He was a kind and thoughtful man and will be missed. My sincerest condolences to his family. Kathleen Fedro

John and I go back to 1984, and my very first teaching job at Bloomington High School. John was our Chapter 1 counselor, and was one of the first on staff to have and use a computer. He tried to teach me how to use it, and even lent it to me for a few weeks. I then left the country for a while (military), and when I returned to southern California, I was hired at Yucaipa. John was there, too. While many of his colleagues and former students will recall him as a teacher at Yucaipa High, I worked with him in a different setting. He was very active in our local teachers' union while I was president. He was such a strong advocate for teachers, and never hesitated to speak up - even when he was in the minority. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word - I had great respect for the way he represented himself and treated other people. What a tragic loss - for his family, for his friends, and for his colleagues. My thoughts are with Vicky, Richard, and the rest of his family.
