John was such a good friend. We thought so much of him, and he is my daughter's godfather. I was reaching out tonight to invite him to her college graduation....I am so heartbroken. Such a wonderful man and friend. My sincerest condolences.

When I stepped out of my car at the cemetery for my Dad's funeral this past summer, Johnny was standing there with open arms. Oh, how glad I was to see him and get the biggest, most sincere hug from him. He had such an old soul even when he was 17 years old and there was never a more gentle giant in this world. I know he is in a world now that is rejoicing but he will be greatly missed here. I was lucky to have known him and to have shared so many wonderful years at CHS, UT & the Y. Love you Charlie & Mrs. Staggs, you're both in my thoughts & prayers.

He made such a difference. I will never forget the talks we had or the trip that 6 of us took to the valley. John drove the mini- winnie we rented. What a blast we had. Godspeed my friend.

I had met John only a short time ago when he was most recently in the Detroit area. My dad was on the board of the Wayne-Westland YMCA where John served, and he always spoke very highly of him. I know that he and my dad worked very well together, and he was certainly a blessing in my dad's life. I am grateful for the role he played here in Michigan, and am saddened by your loss.

John was a very special friend to all of us who knew him in the Southgate Rotary Club (MI). He had one of the warmest personalities and always made you feel like a special friend. And after reading his early life history (football), it's obvious why he was considered by all of us as a 'Fantasy Football' GENIUS!

- To John's family and friends: I'm so sorry for your devastating loss and pray that God's peace be with you. I knew and worked with John when he was at the Conroe Y years ago, played basketball (hilarious!) with him. It was impossible not to have fun when John was around, and he was such a dear, sweet soul - always easy to talk to and a willing listener. Godspeed John!

I am happy that John was in his usual great mood when I last talked with him... amazing, that was just last week. I hope to model his patience, his care and his devotion to his Y work. His spirit will linger with me and all of us for a long while and each time I recall him, I will smile. Warmly,

"John was a close and dear colleague to so many of us here at the YMCA of Detroit. We hold our memories of John closely - he was kind hearted and very dedicated to serving children and families through the YMCA. A kind and loving person who always lived up to the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility - and taught many a child the very same.
