Granny....In 2010 who can say they have a Gran of their own? In my book that term alone means loved by all, not just her own. And that was her. Of course I may be a bit biased because I had the luck and privilege to live two doors away from her most of my formidable years. Gran's house was a safe haven only steps away, and she made all feel that way close or near. Gran was one of the few remaining salt of the earth people. Give you the shirt off of her back, help anyway should could, and never complain once. I think that stands out in my mind the most. Gran had probably one of the toughest lives fraught with adversity, death, misfortunes and never once did I hear her say a negative word. Honestly. I only wish I could say the same for myself. Know this Gran, you will be truly missed and I count myself lucky to have been able to have had as much time as we did together. Get your wings, you truly earned them. Peace, Gran, until we meet again...

She was my gran but also mother to me. She helped raise me. She is going to be greatly missed. A kind, caring & nurturing women. She was my pillar in this unpredictable game of life. She kept me stable as I am sure she did with everybody else who is reading this. We all will miss her very much. Keep her in our hearts always.

I miss you Gran, you will never leave my heart. You were my great grandmom and i will never forget that and will never forget you. I know u cant see this or read this but i want you to know i love you and dont let any one or anything let u lead to think i dont. You would play card with tony and I. We would tell u anything if we were mad at the girl or anything you would comfort us and make us feel better. Althought thats gone and has been for a while i didnt want you to leave its not that i wanted you to spend your life in bed but i want you to be here with me. Now that im old enough to realize things that i didnt when i was little, i realize that you are gone but you r in a better place. Even if i cant accept that theres no way i would do anything to undo it. Hopefully i can sooner or later. But for now you just remember i love you Granny. <3 R.I.P.

Granny...you were the only grandparent in my life, and my youngest memories include you. My favorites were the trips you made to the eastern shore to bridge the gap with our dad. You will be forever in my heart. I loved you dearly and look forward to spending eternity with you. Pass on hugs and kisses to my mom, Betty, Ricky, Jamie, and all the other family members who were there to greet you. Much love Sharon Baker Robbins

To my dear Granny,
It would be impossible to put into words all of my memories and stories of you. So I’ll say this….. Thank you for always being there for me, and thank you for being so wonderful to my children. I will especially treasure the bond between you and Tony, “your little man”. You were his best buddy and I am sure he will be a better person because of it. You were a wonderful person and I will treasure all of the memories I have. I love you and will miss you dearly.

I was bathing my youngest of 3 children tonight my thoughts went to Gran. I could not help but think of how many times she had sat by a tub and washed little ones, whether her own or grandbabies. I thought of her hands going through their soft hair and their soft skin. With a smile on her face. Grans hands were always in motion.
When someone dies I sometimes have this slideshow of their life run through my head. Still shots kind of...taken at different times in their life. Some of these pictures are imaginary since I did not know Gran as she was a little girl or young woman. Some are real memories picked from my own stored thoughts. Here are Grans shots......
Grans parents raising a young girl to work hard but have a tender heart towards others..especially a love for children.
I imagine Granny being strong mentally and physically...she was probably one of those trying early walkers..haha
She probably always had a strong work ethic, even as a child...her parents taught her to never be idle. Did she love baseball as a young girl, I wonder? Did she play ball herself?
I imagine her growing into a beautiful young lady...carrying with her all the attributes her parents had taught her. With her dark hair and slender build. I imagine her falling in love and experiencing that all consuming world of young love...
A marriage to very handsome young man...the awesome, wonderful and downright trying times of unity...
I see Gran being full and glowing with child...experiencing the extreme joy and pain of birth....
holding a newborn and kissing its sweet warm face...
Gran's life also had loss and I am sure extreme pain with these losses...but her parents raised her strong....not to complain and surely not to give up..
Life continues..her children now having babies of thier own..
Gran becomes a grandmother and nurtures and loves all over again....
I see Gran at Uncle Jims house scooping out icecream---she was not stingy either..
I see Gran watching and cheering(or ticked off) at the O's ....
I see Gran with those lucky numbers.....walking, and keeping up with best , at fairs...tapping her foot to any music and people watching...
A special memory....Gran sitting on my bed and patiently and calmly watching me give birth to River...with out a word...moments after his birth, wrapped in a warm blanket she held him and kissed his forehead..still without a word...
We love you Gran and miss you already....
My last thought..
Gran exhaling her last breath here and next inhaling the sweet air of heaven...
Love you, Deana

Why are some people taken away from us too soon and others are able to live long lives? Only God knows the answer to that question, but I will tell you why God gave us Granny for 90 years. She taught us many things in her lifetime, but I will try to list a few.

#1: A Strong Work Ethic- In all of my memories of Granny her hands were never idle. Someone said that idle hands did the devils dirty work. Maybe she believed that because hers were always busy. Whether she was washing dishes or washing a child, it seemed like she was always getting something accomplished. Well, maybe not when the Price is Right was on (Damn Devil - thats what Gran would say!).

#2: Unwavering Strength and Courage: When her husband passed away, she knew that she needed to provide for her family of 6 children so she did. Whether it was working 1 job or 3, she took care of them all with dignity and never looked back. I often used to wonder if she ever thought about what life would have been like if things had been different, but I don't think she did. She just moved ahead, did what she had to do and never looked back. That takes strength and a lot of courage!

#3: Overprotective: Teresa- Do you remember standing on the train station dock waiting for the metro to take us into DC? Tony & Kelly were messing around with their strollers and Granny was fussing at them. You turned to me and said "there she goes again acting like their mother". You were aggravated that she always took on that role before we could. Well, looking back now I see a second pair of eyes always on our children making sure that no harm would come to any of them. I hope I have the same relationship with my grandchildren and I am able to be so close to them that I feel like their second mom.

#4: Adventurous: Granny was up for a field trip anytime whether going to a fair, playing the slots, going to the beach, riding her bike or just going on another shopping trip. She didn't care if she was shopping for groceries, she just didn't want to sit home all day! It seemed like she never sat still for more than 5 minutes. I think it was why she liked animals, there was always something that needed to be taken care of. Thanks Uncle Al for allowing animals into your home finally! I'm sure she enjoyed the dogs not being stuck on the back porch- but did you have to pick the biggest ones on the planet? She probably said that too!

#5: Patient: Well, I personally don't think Granny was patient at all, but I think patience is exactly what she taught us in the past year and a half or so. When her body finally started to fail, we learned that life takes it's own sweet time to end. I think God made her wait with us so we could all think about what it would be like without her. The great thing about it is that we reminisced during that time and shared our memories with her and each other. That made our memories stronger and by sharing them, us closer to each other. I never spent any alone time with Uncle Ray before April, Granny was the reason for that and I will always be grateful. I think we are all better people just for having this wonderful lady in our lives!

That is what I will remember the most and I will make sure that those memories of Granny will be shared with my children to pass on.

Thank you Gran for all of them! We love you and will miss you always!

Love, Gina
