Paul was a longtime friend and a great supporter. He made a tremendous contribution to good government through all his political efforts. I admired him greatly and will miss him very much.
Okla. County Commissioner
He defined 'friend;'. Will remember for his loyalty, spark and as a first-rate fellow. Always so proud of his family. He will be missed by all placed in his path.
Paul was interested in everyone. His warm welcoming smile and gentle ways modeled civility and decency. He did indeed have an uncanny ability to recall details about the lives of others and conversations long ago passed. His interest in us defined what friendship and fellowship is and can be. He truly “never met a stranger.” I had the pleasure of visiting with him shortly before his passing and will remember his kind and thoughtful inquiries as to the health and well-being of my family when he had much to be concerned with himself - but that was Paul. As others have said, he was a gentleman. I admire his tenacity, curiosity and confidence. I don't think Paul Matthews was afraid to discuss or share an opinion on any topic with any person in private or in public. His resolve provided inspiration to introverts such as me. His family of course will miss him, as shall we, his many, many friends.
In an age when the world 'gentleman' has little meaning, Paul was a Gentleman in its true sense. That I always will remember.
Paul was a magnificent gentleman that was always a friend to all. His kind smile will be greatly missed!
Paul was an amazing man who would befriend you quickly and remember the smallest details about you and your family. He and Rita were both Oklahoma emissaries and great friends. Sorry to lose such great people in such a short time. Will think of you both--you leave a strong family heritage behind and we are all better for having known the two of you.
Paul was your friend from the moment he met you and knew no strangers. He had a phenomenal memory for names and family details. He and Rita were two genuine great people and both great advocates of Oklahoma. We will miss you Paul--go and be happy again with Rita!
Loved that Paul. Who wouldn't , when he always told me I was a great Lady. He was my brother Leo friend, and it was through him that I got acquainted with him. He was so proud of OSU, and all their activities. He introduced you by saying where you went to College and you were in if it was OSU. I was special because he accepted me and I was an OU graduate. Loved that guy.
Paul was a great tour guide at the Oklahoma State Capitol. The Leadership Guymon Committee would request that Paul handle the tour of the Capitol. During those tours he would grab the attention of Senators and Representatives to speak about their duties as an elected official. Paul will be greatly missed! May you find comfort in God's loving grace.
I will miss you Cousin, but with the pain you were going through, I am sure you are better off now back with Rita, Best Wishes and love to remaining family through this remaining very difficult time. Some time down the road we will meet again!
Paul served as a volunteer tour guide at the Oklahoma State Capitol. The kids he took on tour could have a special treat if they ran into a legislator or lobbyist that Paul knew. I visited with Paul just a few weeks ago and had the opportunity to share thank you notes from the Guymon Leadership group that he had taken on tour just a few months ago. Paul's connection with Guymon was special. I'll miss Paul's smile here at the Capitol.
My heart is sadden by his passing. However I know he is happier as he has gone on to join the love of his life, Rita. He will always hold a special place in my heart as I have known him for probably over 50 years. Your family will be in our prayers during this time.
Our hearts were saddened to hear of Paul's passing. My acquaintance with Paul began in 1991 when I was appointed to the Oklahoma Transportation Commission. I enjoyed a lasting relationship with Paul over the years through my membership in the Oklahoma Highway Users Federation. I always found Paul to be professional in everything he endeavored to do. Paul was truly a man of Integrity. Take your rest my friend,
