One of my childhood memories of my Uncle Dick was the one dollar rivalry bets that he and my mother, Murl, would place on all of the Alabama/Georgia games. Being from Georgia, she always enjoyed that. Once he laughed and told me that, when he died, it would NOT be during football season!
So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. He was the one guy I remembered from the annual 10th Armored Reunions. His sense of humor was great. I enjoyed talking with him at the last reunion in Louisville. (Also, loved the story of being pulled over on a trip through Wabash Indiana.)

My sympathy to Mr. Coffee's family. What a wonderful person to have known and to have him as an Alumnus of The University of Alabama is such an honor to The U of A family. I was so privileged to serve on the National Alumni Executive Committee with his son, Dick Coffee,III. I know he will be missed but hope you all gain much strength in this difficult time with all the wonderful memories. God bless and keep you.

Come to think of iit,Dick may have been a Drum Major for our Decatur High band, he was so full of zest and life -probably still is even in death- 91 is a good long life for a man that enjoyed life as he did.
Eddie Johns thank you for posting the obit site in FB with Dick Coffee's picture. Yes, I knew him. He grew up in Decatur around the corner on Ferry St. He moved to Bham where he became A #1 Alabama fan -I believe he had a trumpet- he would blow a charge at the games. Very colorful and out going and popular. Always upbeat. Seems he published booklets of happening in Bham and maybe other cities. I believe he grew 'show' roses that won prizes at the B'ham Botanial Gardens. You wouldn't miss noticing Dick if he were anywhere around you. Full of life-probably still is even in death.
Mrs. Coffee, my name is Rhonda D. McClendon. I am Ann Strength's first cousin. I met you and your husband many years ago. You and your late husband seem like family from the stories that your brother, "Johnny" has told me over the years! God bless you and yours in this time. Rhonda

It was very sad to learn of the passing of Mr.Coffee. I remember him from many Alabama games over the years especially a difficult loss to Ole Miss in Jackson. I also remember him from many years at the Birmingham News discussing advertising. I am very sorry for your loss.
Our world is diminished by the loss of Dick Coffee. He was one of a kind. May God comfort his family in this time of sorrow.
